Tracting in Toggenberg Tal- Ebnat Kappel 28 Nov 2005
I was fairly new to the mission. We were serving in Ebnat Kappel. my companion (Bro.Michael Warner had just become Senior) and I were tracting in a high rise apartment in a nearby town. When we knocked on one of the doors a man opened. It was unusual for a man to be at home during the middle of the day. The door approach we used was an opinion poll asking 5 or 6 questions about the purpose of life and whether the person had heard of the Book of Mormon. I don’t remember if we finished asking all of the questions or not. Surprisingly the man readily invited us into his apartment. He led us into a small room where he sat down at a desk that had bookshelfs behind it. We sat down on chairs facing him. The man said he was a minister for his church. He then proceeded to reach up and take an anti-mormon book down from his shelf and said so you are Mormons. You believe …..He went on and on telling half truths about what his book said we believed. After his tirade he then suddenly stood up and said let’s pray. He then led us out to his living room and we kneeled down together. He said he would say the prayer. He soon started ranting and raving in words that weren’t German or English or anything that sounded like a standard language. When the man was finally done he said Amen. He then asked us why we didn’t join in his prayer speaking tongues. He mocked my companion Bro. Warner asking why Bro. Warner didn’t say amen after the prayer. Bro. Warner said it was because he didn’t feel the spirit during the minister’s prayer. The minister was angry and told us to get out of his apartment and he said he better never find us in his apartment area again. We avoided his area for a couple of days, but soon we were back doing our work in the same and adjacent apartments. We never saw the man again. I was surprised at how arrogant the man was.
