If anyone is interested in participating in some online discussion, please come and help me build up my message board. It is designed as a positive environment in which discussion can take place without fear of ridicule or insult. Discussion topics include LDS beliefs, general religious discussion, La langue Francaise, international discussion, and (if interest is shown) could be expanded to include discussion about Tahiti. I am interested in hearing from anyone with whom I may have served, first as a missionary in 1935-1937, if anyone is still out there! And also as a couple with my wife, Dorothy, two missions in the 80's.

Dear friend of the Tahiti Papeete Mission,
A while back I was helping my daughter with a school english project, a biography about her grandfather, Hiro Mariteragi. She wanted photographs of him and his family when they were young. We had a a few, but not very many. My wife, Roselyne, has one photo of her great-grandfather, Raka Toriki a Mariteragi, but not one of his wife. I wondered if any photos of her even existed. I mentioned this to a friend, and he said that he had one! It just so happens that his grandmother was her sister! This got me thinking that there might be many more rare photographs of family members that we never knew existed. The more I thought about it, the more certain I became that hidden away in people's closets and albums were photos that would be important to our family history. I also thought that we might have photos that could be important to someone else's family history.
So in September of 1999 I started a project of collecting old photographs of the members of the LDS Church in Tahiti. I wrote some software to display them and created a CD-Rom of all these photos. In this first volume, there are over 500 photos, mostly black and white, ranging from 1900 to around the mid 1970s. I tried to include as many names and dates asI could, but I don't know everyone, and it would have taken me forever to get everyone's name. The database is searchable, based on the notes or year that go with each photo. You can print the pictures, even export them as JPEG files for use in other applications.
I am currently working on a second volume. If anyone is interested in sharing their photos, please contact me via email. I'm looking for photos of members, missionaries, and significant events or buildings (Chapels, etc.). Scenic photos are generally not interesting, unless the subject matter may be important to someone else. Some that I thought interesting were included in the first volume.
Volume one is now available. If you are interested in purchasing it, print and fill out the order form below. and mail it your payment.

It has been very rewarding to get this website organized. I have made it a goal to try to have 201 alumni on our list by the end of 2001. We currently have 101 missionaries listed as of 01/04/01. I would appreciate everyone getting the word out about this site, especially during mission reunions. I would especially like to include alumni from Tahiti even if they do not have e-mail addresses (phone numbers and/or addresses are good enough). Thank you very much!
