Dear Fellow Missionaries of the Taipei Taiwan Mission 1997-2000
Over the past several months we have had several experiences related to our Taiwan
adventure. We appreciate the updates and experiences you send us. We seem to get
one or two such updates each week. We still serve in the Los Angeles Temple one week per month and travel some. So on our return, we enjoy reading the updates and viewing the photos you send.
This past month at the temple a brother hailed me in the locker room. It was Joe Johnson who was our long time home teacher in Taipei. He had moved to Shanghai and now lives in the central California area. It was good to visit with him again.
A month ago, together with President and Sister Robert Murdock (Kaoshung Mission President 1998-2001) we visited President and Sister Kim (Taichung Mission President 1998-2001) who live in Hawaii. From the photos enclosed you will see we meet with some Taiwan missionaries now living/studying in Hawaii. At this dinner visit we were able to receive an update on the saints in Taiwan from Elder Jared Yang, Area Authority Seventy. We attended church and the Laie Temple with the Kims and the Murdocks. It was a true Mission Presidents’ reunion.
On June 5th we attended a reunion of the Southern Far East Mission 1955-1960. It was wonderful to see all these former missionaries and to see our mission president, H. Grant Heaton, and his wife, Luanna. This was the group that opened Hong Kong, Taiwan and eventually the Philippines. Two of the four missionaries that opened Taiwan were there. Dezzie Clegg, the first sister missionary for Taiwan, was there. And, also, Nora Koot, the first person to join the church in Hong Kong, was there. A photograph of the Taipei, Taiwan Presidents in attendance is included in this letter (l. to r. Harris, Miner, Jackson (first Taipei Mission President), Nielson, Powelson, Crook.
We remembered experiences and stories from the past. It was wonderful to hear these missionaries give updates on people they had stayed in contact with over the years. When I read your messages, I note on the headline section of your email you are often sending the letter to a group of family and friends from the mission. I encourage you to continue this practice; keep in contact with each other. Love those it is possible to reach. We love you all.
