Obituary - Karin Vandenberg 30 Apr 2009
Karin Desiree Vandenberg- Carlstrom 1959 ~ 2009 Our loving mother, wife, daughter, and sister Karin Desiree Vandenberg-Carlstrom was taken unexpectedly on Saturday, April 18, 2009, at the age of 49 in Salt Lake City, Utah, in a hiking accident on her beloved Mt. Olympus. She lived her life with quiet determination, healthy resilience and extraordinary love for her family and friends.Karin was the ultimate Mom. She derived great satisfaction from helping her boys, Cole and Jack, achieve their best, both academically and athletically. A perfectionist, Karin taught her two sons that if anything was worth doing, it was worth doing well. School projects, swimming or soccer practice, were critiqued with suggestions on how it could just be a bit better. Karin embraced life to the fullest with determination and enthusiasm. Up early every morning for a run or bike ride, even in inclement weather, she then would get the family off to work and school before going to work herself. After full days in the office, she would take the boys to their athletic practices and family dinners with her husband, friend and lover Steve. Karin was born in Den Haag, The Netherlands on December 3, 1959 to Richard and Desiree (Daisy) Schenk Vandenberg. She was the second of four siblings; Rick, her older brother and Sharon, her younger sister, and Robert, her younger brother. Richard and Daisy immigrated to Orange County, Southern California with their three young children in the fall of 1962. Karin enjoyed many happy times at Corona Del Mar beach playing with her siblings. The young family moved up and down the coast in California with Richard's work for Chevron, settling in San Luis Obispo where Karin graduated from high school in 1977. After years of international travel, Karin moved to Utah from San Francisco to take a job with the Nature Conservancy opening the Great Basin office. Several years later, she joined Haley & Stolebarger as a legal secretary in the firm's environmental practice. She moved to Appel & Mattson, where she completed Heald Business College with a paralegal certificate and continued her career as a paralegal and office manager before joining Strong & Hanni as a full-time paralegal in 2002. Her environmental interests were perfectly aligned with her love of the outdoors. She completed numerous half-marathons, marathons and ultra-marathons, including the Squaw Peak 50 and the Boston Marathon, consistently placing at the top of her age group, and beating many of her male running friends, much to their chagrin. Since 1995, she participated in the annual MS - 150 Bike Ride fundraiser. She treasured her time with family and friends in outdoor activities, including happy times skiing at Alta, camping in the Uintah mountains, running with her friends and hiking the mountain trails. Skiing, running and biking were the perfect 'trifecta' for Karin. However, her most significant accomplishments were that of loving wife, devoted mother, respecting daughter, loyal sibling and fun-loving friend. Karin's legacy includes her husband Steve, her sons Cole and Jack, parents, Richard and Daisy of Scottsdale, AZ; brother Rick, of Moraga, CA; sister, Sharon, of Lafayette, CA; and brother, Robert, of Park City, UT. Special thanks to all of Karin's many loyal friends for their love and assistance through this trying period for our family. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 25, 2009, at 12:00 noon at the Mt. Olympus Chapel at 3862 East Oakview Drive (4275 South). A viewing will be held Friday, April 24, 2009 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 South, and Friday at the Mt. Olympus Chapel prior to the memorial service from 10:30- 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Karin Vandenberg-Carlstrom Memorial Fund at Wells Fargo Bank.
