Translating Scripture 01 Sep 2005
I am setting a deadline of 4 October 2005 for submission of items for inclusion in the book I've been writing "Translating Scripture - The 1st Edition of the Thai Book of Mormon".

Besides interesting information among the things I am looking for are:

(1) Someone who was present at the groundbreaking for the Asoke chapel in 1971.

(2) A picture of an Elder sitting on a Buddha at Sukhothai in June of 1972.

(3) Comments on reactions of members and non-members to the Sukhothai incident (1972).

(4) Pictures from the day of Sister Sri's father's funeral in 1975.

(5) Pictures and information about President Hinckley's visit in June 2000.

(6) Official Portraits of President and Sister Slater and President and Sister Hansen.

Thanks to all who have helped with this project.

Gold and Silver Books 15 Aug 2005
When I was the Service I was told about Gold and Silver books that a people in Northern Thailand had and then lost but were promised that someday they would be given the truth again. Does anyone know this story.

Thank you

Book: Translating Scripture 02 Aug 2005
The book I've been writing - current working title "Translating Scripture - The 1st Edition of the Thai Book of Mormon" is coming along well though I am still waiting for several people to get back to me with their experiences. One chapter deals with early challenges in Thailand so I am asking for input from those who did not participate in the work of translation. If you have personal experiences with any of the following I invite you to send me those experiences:

(1) Learning the Thai Language (If you are among the 1st 30 Elders to serve in Thailand).
(2) The visit of Ezra Taft Benson in December 1968.
(3) The Zone Conference to Sukothai in 1972 and the aftermath of the "Sitting on the Buddha Incident". Joseph Wall will be the final editior for this event. In particular I'm interested in what effect the event had on the members at that time.
(4) The deaths of Elder Willis and Elder Huntington in May 1971.
(5) Groundbreaking for the Asoke Chapel in 1971 or its construction which was completed in 1972.
--------------------------------------
Also any if any of you want to suggest and provide information on important events since 1976 I may consider those for inclusion as well.

In particular I am looking for anyone who has notes from President Hincklye's address in Thailand in June 2000.

Conversions where the Book of Mormon was key to the converts early testimony.

Please email your experiences to

Tsunami Relief Still Needed 02 Aug 2005
Some of you know Dave Rockwood (Thai Missionary 75-77). His company is engaged in Asia American trade and this takes him to Asia (including Thailand) frequently. He was interviewed on a Salt Lake radio station yesterday. You can still listen to it for a couple of more days at http://www.kcpw.org/midday-metro.php (look down the page to recording from past days). In short he says that recovery in Phuket has proceeded well in the city (lots of BB). Outside the city people are still suffering. He says foreign people are trying to help but not being effective because they don't know the language or the customs. He wants his organization (Thai Tsunami Help.Org) to support a Thai returned missionary and spouse to go to Pukhet and help connect the relief available with those who need it.

So he's asked the Thai returned missionary community to
(1) find a qualified couple who want to spend 3-4 months in Phuket and
(2) Frequent Flyer miles (120,000) and
(3) $2500/mo to get them there and back and support them while there.

He and family members have spent some weekends there trying to help. I also know that Fred Shepherd and his wife Phensri have spent weeks helping down there as well and perhaps others that I am not aware of.

So FIRST is there a Thai RM and spouse who would like to persue this opportunity?? Once they are in place I believe the Thai RM community can come up with the necessary support to make this happen.

If you are interested in going or helping with expenses for those who go please contact
dave@thaitsunamihelp.org.

Thai Language test 20 Jun 2005
Hi everyone,

I am looking for a little information about testing out of Thai. I'm taking the test at BYU in November and was wondering if anyone has taken it. If you have write me at: megastove@cc.usu.edu

I'd like to know what to expect. I'm not really sure what I need to brush up on. Do they test on a lot of vocabulary? What about reading and writing!?

Thanks a lot for your help!
