Mission ?'s 11 Oct 2006
Hello All, I am going to be serving in Thailand pretty soon. I enter the MTC on Nov. 15th and I have a couple ?'s. How long does it usually take for a letter to get from the US to Thailand and visa versa? My mom is really worried about me getting contact solution in Thailand. I've heard there are little shops for everything in Thailand so I'm assuming there will be a shop that has contact solution. My mom wants me to keep posting ?'s as they come and I will gratefully accept anyone's comments on things i should know or things you wish you had known before you got there or something that's important to take. Thanx!

New Coup-Old Coup 22 Sep 2006
This recent coup reminds me of a similar coup when I was living in Bangkok clear back in, when was it, 1970/71?. The prime minister surrounded the palace with tanks overnight and took over the government. I remember seeing those tanks and trucks of soldiers in the streets. Less than half the students showed up at our school that day. There was a curfew declared, too. It will be interesting to see what changes are made. One thing is for sure, King Bhumipol Adunyadej has done more to serve his country than any other king in my life time. I have a lot of respect and admiration for both the king and Queen Sirikit. I think Queen Sirikit is the best role model for women in the whole world, bar none.

Thai Coup 21 Sep 2006
I am currently living just a few blocks away from the "Coup." September 20 was declared a national holiday and schools were all closed. Yesterday I went and took pictures with the soldiers and tanks. They are more of a tourist attraction than anything. Little kids were climbign on them to get their pictures taken. Most people in Bangkok seem to be very accepting of the change. I will post pictures soon.

Thai Coup - 40th Tour Update 21 Sep 2006
Hi Everyone,

Just a note to let you that nothing has changed for the scheduled tour. The King has given his blessing to the transfer of Government and no political unrest is forseen for the near future. My contacts in the Thai Government (reliable ones) have assured that it is business as usual and there is no need for concern especially for visitors. According to several newspaper reports, no one was even aware of the events happening as close as 3 blocks away. Bars and restuarants remained open and doing land office business.

It appears that tour members (now 15 confirmed) will be arriving at the new airport. I have airport maps (in Thai) and and a list of important telephone numbers for the new airport if you are interested I'll be happy to email you a copy.

BTW, there is still time to join the group for any last minute travellers. Email me or call Michelle at International Grandway Travel asap for details . Somsak 1@aol.com.

Regards,

HM King Bhumipol Adunyadej the Great 20 Sep 2006
CNN has an interesting article on the influence and power of HM King Bhumipol Adunyadej the Great. The web link is:

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/09/20/thai.king.ap/index.html

While the article probably overstates the King's involvement in the recent coup, it does describe the influence over the country's affairs that he maintains because of his goodness and love for the people of Thailand.

"He is one of the greatest kings in the history of the world." (a quote from a book that I am fond of). Long live the King of Thailand.
