Reunions 02 Oct 2006
We want to thank everyone who came to our house Friday night and those who joined the chat room Sunday afternoon. We had fun at both events. Everyone wants to know what is currently happening in the mission. I would encourage recently returned missionaries to provide information about meeting locations, branch members, and tell us some spiritual experiences. We would also like to see pictures!!! Your input would be appreciated. The "virtual reunion" on the net was neat. We heards from missionaries on the East coast and West coast and points in between. It was nice to hear from missionaries we have not heard from in a while. Love McQueen

Help needed in Zaporozhye 25 Sep 2006
My Wife and I from SLC Utah have been raising money to help out an Orphanage in Zaporozhye and the Hematology Ward in the Zaporozhye Hospital. We now want to put on a Party for Cancer children in the Hospital. We have a Non-Member in Zaporozhye we are currently working with but he is in need of help that could be a great service project for Missionaries in the city to assist him with.
I gave him the address and Phone number from this site to the mission Office in Donetsk but I think he is afraid to call. Does anyone have an e-mail address of a Member in Zaporozhye or the Mission Home/Office I could write to for help? Plese e-mail me at outofline99@yahoo.com (btw We do not write or speak Russian)

Thanks

Gorlavka Pharmacy Bldg 23 Sep 2006
I think I've found the Gorlavka Pharmacy Building where the one branch used to meet. I think a remont was done on the inside of this building and the meeting place is nice. It would be nice if some one has pictures of this branch if they would post them. Google Earth 48 degrees 19 minutes 42.92 seconds N and 38 degrees 03 minutes 26.24 seconds East at eye level 2825. I have a request for all the newly return missionaries: please post any pictures of the meeting places and branch members on this site. Love McQueens

Virtual Reunion 18 Sep 2006
Dear Missionaries,

I have received a number of positive replies from missionaries who served with us about the virtual reunion at 4:00 PM Mountain time on Sunday 1 October 2006 right after the last session of conference. The first of many virtual reunions. Every one needs to go to the chat room on the mission web site www.mission.net/ukraine/donetsk - this will be interesting. See you Sunday the first. Please let other missionaries from our group know about this. Love McQueens

Virtual Reunion 08 Sep 2006
Dear Missionaries,

I was wondering if any one would be interested in going to the chat room on this site on Sunday 1 October 2006 right after the afternoon session of conference (4:00 PM Utah time). This would give those of us who haven't talked for a while the chance to communicate. There are those who are out of the state of Utah who might like to visit over the net. Again, I would like to talk about spiritual experiences we had on our mission. Please send this request to all your companions who might not be on this mission site but that you have contact with. It would be fun to have a good response. I'm sure parents of current missionaries might also be interested in watching our conversations so please don't type anything which might cause them concern. I would like testimony building events. Would this be OK with everyone? I remember when we tried the first satellite general conference in our mission. This will be our first "chat" reunion. Why haven't we thought of this before? We could have Elder Day write a skit!! Your thoughts. Love McQueens

Re: McDonald's 08 Sep 2006
Well, I'm glad all you "old-timers" feel so much better about yourselves knowing that your missions were so much harder than those of us young folks.

Tongue in cheek fellas, tongue in cheek.

Can we move on from McDonald's now?

McDonald's 08 Sep 2006
Well, I can't say I'm the biggest fan of McDonald's, but I can say that I sure am grateful that I don't have any reason to regret my mission. It was one great experience, all the tough times included.

McDonalds 08 Sep 2006
Well, I for one look back and am thankful that we didn't have McDonalds. Fessia would have wanted to stop there every day, and just think of all the wasted time. (sorry Fessia, you made it to easy) :)

In all seriousness I wouldn't change a thing about the Ukraine when I served. True, we had plenty of challenges while we were there (just as many, only different for the young bucks) and that just made us stronger.

Now that I think about it, maybe just one change ... my language skills. Maybe that's why I never found the McDonalds, just didn't know how to ask!!

Spoiled!! 07 Sep 2006
Holy cow! Chinese restaurants, McDonalds?!! Man, were you guys were served later than 1995 spoiled! We were just grateful to get a Doka Pizza in Donetsk every now and then, but it was NOTHING like real Pizza Hut pizza. My whole mission I dreamed of a big fat cheeseburger. Once I get Katie Parrish to bring back a Big Mac from Mcdonald's in Moscow when she went for dental work. Although it was over a day old, it was like manna.

I don't know if the location that I gave the address to is the same location as in the pictures on the Kiev mission web site. On the Kiev mission web site I asked if they are the same location. My question is at the following web page as soon as it is approved:

Old Fart Reunion Details 18 Jul 2006
OK—I’ve coordinated with Jonathan and Leanne Freedman, who have graciously agreed to have all us yokels over to wreak havoc on their nice home. So sugar up the kids, step on some dog doo, and don’t bathe from now until later that night. The get together will be on WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 2, AT 6:30. Their address is (still, I hope) 1474 Harvard Ave in Salt Lake City. Here are directions:
From I-15, exit 1300 South and head east.
Turn left (north) on 1300 East (That is the corner of 1300 South and 1300 East)
Turn right (east) on Harvard Ave. (second right off 1300 East)
We are up the street on the right (south) side – red brick house with ivy.

The dinner is BBQ/potluck style. Please RSVP to me by next Tuesday (July 27th) and I’ll hand out food assignments. (burgers, salads, desserts, chips, drinks, etc). Hope to see you all there. And if you know of any other Merrill-ites that were not contacted please invite them!
Also, if anyone has contact with the Merrills please let them know of this event. It was really great seeing them last year, and it would be great to see them again.

Letters to Branches 08 May 2006
At the last mission reunion at President McQueen's house we talked about how helpful it would be if each missionary would keep in contact with at least those members who he baptized. It is a wonderful idea and I encourage everyone to keep in contact with the wonderful saints in Ukraine.

I want to keep in contact with those I knew in Ukraine, but I do not have contact information for many of them. The easiest way I could think of to try and get back in contact with the members is to write a letter to the branches where I served. It did not have to be anything too fancy. I just wanted let them know what has been going on since I got home from my mission. I let them know that I am still alive; I am not yet married but doing well nonetheless; what I had studied; where I work; and how I and my family are doing. I then closed it by adding my contact information and telling them that I would love to hear from them. I included a recent photo of myself and ended up with a simple letter that I am sure the members that knew me will love. I sent copies for each branch to a member with whom I have kept in contact. The member then took one letter to the local branch and passed the rest on to the missionaries. I imagine you could also send copies to the mission office.

Here is the text of the letter that I sent. I hope that it might be helpful in generating ideas for writing your own letters to the saints who remain close to your heart.

Dear Missionaries,

We had a wonderful reunion Friday night at our home. It is so enjoyable to
just sit around and talk about the mission. We loved listening to all the
memorable experiences. We were touched by the testimonies which proved
once again that those who served were generous, obedient, spiritual, and
kind. Our discussion concerning random acts of kindness was inspiring. We
did not know that so many of you were doing such kind things on a daily
basis. Some missionaries are still calling, writing, and emailing members
and friends in Ukraine. We are impressed with the number of missionaires
who have returned to Ukraine or are planning on visiting in the near
future. We ask those who have gone to share their photos with us and to
those who are going - please take lots of pictures. For a few hours Friday
night it felt like we were back in the mission environment, thanks to all
who came and brought the spirit with them. Love McQueens PS We have
posted the pictures at www.msnusers.com/UkraineDonetskMission

Dear Missionaries,

For those of you who served in Sumy, there is an interesting slide show
presentations at www.brama.com/news/elections the slide show is on the
right margin. We are sure everyone has taken some interest in the recent
elections. We just hope that no matter what happens the political
situation does not have a negative impact on the growth of the church.
There are some of you who lived through the first few growing years after
the mission was opened, there are some of you who lived through the Balkan
war era, and some of you lived through the Iraq war era. THe Ukrainians
love their politics. Let's just pray for the missionaires, members, and
the country. We are going to a meeting with the old area presidency
tomorrow night. We are hoping someone from the new area presidency is
there so we can get an update on the progress of the mission and the Europe
East Area. We want to thank Elder Hislop for the pictures. The new
missionaries who have just returned home, please provide us with current
pictures of the mission. We want to see pictures of the new branch
buildings and of the members and of missionary moments. We can't tell you
how the picture of the Andersen's getting ready to leave the Kievsky chapel
in their new car brought back so many memories of the drive to Dneper.
Pictures, articles, and testimonies are needed on this website to keep the
interest flowing for the most wonderful mission in the world. Love
McQueens Please send this email on to your mothers. They might make you
write a story or send a picture. Just kidding.

Dear Missionaries,

I hope everyone is keeping up on the current weather in Ukraine. It is
extremely cold and snowy. We remember those cold nights waiting to get
missionaries on the train to Kharkov. We remember the numerous stories of
missionaries slipping on the ice. In November 1999, we finally got the new
missionaires off the train at about 1:30 in the morning and took them to
our apartment for a well done Thanksgiving dinner. We had everyone sleep
at our apartment and yes we got them up at 0630 the next morning. What
great memories. Love McQueens
