Upon returning home to Portland, Oregon from the mission field in May of 1988, I returned to Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho for my second year and graduated in April of 1989 with an Associates Degree in B.A. In August of 1989, my long-time sweeheart, Kelley Bailey, and I were the first couple married in the Portland, Oregon temple. Many of you may remember that Kelley and I met at Ricks College, and she waited for me during my mission.Further, after leaving Ricks College, I enrolled at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho. I spent the next two years there and graduated in May of 1991 with a Bachelors Degree in B.A., with an emphasis in Accounting. I immediately took (and thank goodness passed) the CPA exam. Kelley and I then moved back to my home town of Portland, Oregon, where I started a career with Price Waterhouse. I am continuing to take night classes at Portland State University, at Oregon State University, and at the University of Oregon. In December of 1998, I graduated from Portland State University with a Masters of Business Administration, with an emphasis in Taxation. I hope to complete a law degree within the next couple of years.Also, Kelley and I are blessed to have been given two beautiful children so far. Jordan Alexis Deming (girl) was born in Feb. of 1995. Michael David Deming (boy) was born in Jan. of 1999.Additionally, Kelley and I have been planning a return trip to Uruguay for five years now. Each year we put it off because something came up. However, the current plan is to revist my South American home in late November of 2000. Anybody care to join me or hook-up?In conclusion, I would love to reestablish contact with my old companions and friends from the mission field. Dean Wilson, Eric Christensen, Jeff Wight, and President and Sister Ayala are the only missionary contacts with whom I still have managed to maintain communication. Please email, call, or write. Ayala concluded his mission in Uruguay, worked for the Church Educational System in Chile, served as a member of the Seventy, and recently was released (Oct. 1998) as the Temple President for the Santiago, Chile temple. When I returned home from my mission I attended BYU. While attending
school I also taught Spanish at the Language Training Mission. I graduated from BYU with a BA degree in history. I attended law school at the University of Arizona and received by Juris Doctor degree in 1975. That same year I started practicing law with the law firm of Udall, Shumway, Blackhurst, Allen & Lyons, and I have remained with that firm for almost 25 years. I currently am a senior partner in the firm. One of my law partners, David K. Udall, is also a former Uruguayan missionary, having served in the middle to late 1950's. He just finished an assignment as a Mission President in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1977 I married Carolyn Shumway, and we have four children. Our oldest son, Matthew, returned from the England Bristol mission in July, 1999, and our second son has received his call to serve in the Ecuador Guayaquil South Mission. I have served in various positions in the church such as Varsity Coach, Young Men's president, Elders Quorum president, Bishop, High Councilor, Scoutmaster (I thoroughly enjoyed this calling), Gospel Doctrine teacher, 1st Counselor in the Stake YM Presidency, as well as various other teaching positions in the Church. I am also active on the district level of the Boy
Scouts of America, and have served in various commissioner positions. I am
currently serving as the Mesa District Scout Commissioner. This allows me
to pursue my love of camping, backpacking and enjoying the outdoors.
