From the Book 15 Mar 2005
The pure love of Christ

Near the end of his mortal life, Moroni used the venue of the Book of Mormon as to express his testimony. He taught us some very important things. They must have seemed critical to him - he knew he was about to die. Would not your final, mortal words to others be those of prime importance to you? Words that you would want you survivors take to heart and remember for the rest of their lives?

One of these important teachings was about charity.

We hear and read a lot about charity. We know, for example, the motto adopted by our dear Relief Society sisters, "Charity Never Faileth." We know it has something to do with loving and helping others.

But Moroni gave us perhaps the best and fullest definition of all. In Moroni 7:47, he said:

"But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever."

According to this great prophet, charity is the pure love our Savior and master has for us. It is not the love, per se, that we have for others (although that is a result of charity). Christ loves us purely. He has mercy and compassion for us - He has charity for us.

What more could we possibly want than for Christ to shed His pure love upon us? What gift could possibly be greater? I can assure you that once you have felt this love - this charity - you would not trade it for all the riches of the world.

But how can one be a partaker of this wonderful and amazing gift?

The next verse (48) outlines the instruction very plainly:

"Pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart, that ye may be filed with this love, which He hath bestowed upon all who are true followers of His son, Jesus Christ."

Imagine.

You can be filled with the pure love of Christ if you will but with real intent and with all the energy of your heart, ask heavenly Father for it. Father will not only give you this gift, He will fill you with it!

Of all the promises the gospel of Jesus Christ offers, this pure love of Christ is the sweetest of all. Of course, there is nothing that comes from God that is not a desirable gift, but as Nephi learned in his vision, the love of God is the most joyous to the soul (see 1 Nephi 11:23).

I promise you, this gift will make it all worth it. All that you will endure in your process of surrendering will be nothing compared to receiving the pure love of Christ in your life.

Surrendering to Christ 15 Mar 2005
To my dear "little sisters"...

The book you've heard me rant about, the book I'm writing, "Surrendering to Christ" is nearing the first draft completion. Since you've asked more about it, I'm posting one essay from the book - one of my favorites.

I love you all and I am so grateful that, once the seed was planted, so many of you refused to let the seed die. Now I am carrying on the work and doing my part to bring souls to Christ.

Elder Zundel's Message to everyone!!! 05 Mar 2005
Dear Temple Square Friends,

We really enjoyed seeing old friends and sharing some TS experiences this past week in St. George, UT. The McCombs have a lovely home and they had arranged some wonderful activities for us. There were about 50 of us who met on Sunday evening at their home for a buffet and then a Fireside by President Cook. The McCombs' current Bishop has a wife who was converted as a teenager after a visit to Temple Square and so she told of that experience. Sister Cook also recalled some choice experiences of the time there with you Sisters.

On Monday, we went to the St. George Temple followed by a chapel session hosted by the Temple President [Hiskey] who was a counselor to President Cook. He and his wife did a wonderful job of talking about the difficulties the pioneers had in building the temple. They also told of the blessing that came to President Woodruff there in having the founding fathers of the USA appearing in vision to ask that their work be done in this the first Temple in the latter-days where work for the dead was performed. We had a catered lunch back at the McCombs' and then that evening we all went to a play in the St. George Theater.

On Tuesday, many of the couples played golf while the rest of us visited some of the historic sites in the area and went to look at some of the devastation done by the recent flooding in the area where many of the saints there have lost their homes. That evening we had another catered dinner in the club house near the home of the Bennett's. During that meeting, I shared some pictures and notes from many of you who have furnished updates to me. Please know that all the Senior couples pray for you a on very regular basis. We love each of you and want you to have success and happiness even though for some of you there are often periods of discouragement. We hope those times pass and that you can find the happiness we all want for you and that you deserve. I have attached some words that I like from Elder Eyring that tries to explain why we all go through the tough times we have from time to time.

A couple of weeks ago we were so happy to see Maggie Taylor in our Sacrament meeting at the hospital as she had been invited to come and sing. She is living in Provo and is working and taking voice lessons. She has met some music people who are helping her to cut a CD in the Spring. We hope that she is successful in this venture that she has dreamed about for a long time.

May the Lord bless you all and we send our love,

Br & Sis Zundel

"We have trials to face because our Heavenly Father loves us. His purpose is to help us qualify for the blessing of living with Him and His Son, Jesus Christ, forever in glory and in families. To qualify for that gift we had to receive a mortal body. With that mortality we understood that we would be tested by temptations and by difficulties." (Henry B. Eyring, "In the Strength of the Lord," Ensign, May 2004, 16)
"The test a loving God has set before us is not to see if we can endure difficulty. It is to see if we can endure it well. We pass the test by showing that we remembered Him and the commandments He gave us. And to endure well is to keep those commandments whatever the opposition, whatever the temptation, and whatever the tumult around us. We have that clear understanding because the restored gospel makes the plan of happiness so plain." (Henry B. Eyring, "In the Strength of the Lord," Ensign, May 2004, 17)

A Surprise Call 07 Feb 2005
James Hofheins writes:

I haven't been "allowed" to see or interact with my son since he was about 4. He turned 8 on December 5 of last year, and that was a bummer day for me.

Last week, out of the blue, I got a call from my ex-wife. She was just calling, she said, to verifiy my address and employment, etc. It was strangely cordial.

Then, about 20 minutes later, another call. My dad called me to the phone and when I answered, a tiny voice started talking.

I asked who it was - not daring to hope.

It was him - my son. The boy I had thought I would never be able to see or interact with again in this life. He asked me to come to his baptism this Saturday.

Wow.

I am still in shock. The good kind of shock.
For the first time in my life, I feel like a real dad.

I got to the baptism, and my son and his grandfather were sitting on the couch in the foyer, all dressed in white. It took a few minutes for my boy to recognize me, but when he did, he smiled and I got a sweet hug.

I was really nervous during the baptism - or at least up to the time when it was his turn in the font. Then I stood and watched with pride. After, we all filed into the primary room for his confirmation.

I wasn't sure what to do - his mom and grandparents couldn't have known about the changes made in my life. The last time they saw me, I reeked of smoke and was nowhere near ready or worthy to perform a priesthood ordinance.

But it was his day, and I was content to sit and just take it all in.

My ex father-in-law invited my dad to the circle, and my dad nudged me. My son smiled as I took my place in the circle and his grandpa gave the boy the most precious gift he can get at his age - the gift of the Holy Ghost.

It was amazing. I felt it and it was *strong*.

Afterward, my boy and I sat and I got to present him with the gifts I picked out for him.

His first set of scriptures in a tote that has CTR emblazoned on the side. A journal with a short but very loving letter in the front. And a big hug and kiss for the boy who made his daddy proud today.

Wow.

Now I know what it's like to be a dad.
You know, one very surprising thing about this event was that it was an answer to my prayers - more than one.

I had really struggled late last year to see myself as Heavenly Father sees me. I wanted to know if He approved of me as I am now, or if more work needed to be done or...?

When I got the call from my son on Wednesday night, I didn't care that it had been years. I didn't care if he had been reluctant or scared to talk to me. He could have asked me for the world and I would have slaved the rest of my life to give it to him.

Now, I want him to call me every day. I want him tl share what he wants to share with me. He can not possibly ask for anything that I woudn't want to give him - as long as it is for his best good. There is no way he can ask amiss.

If he doesn't call for awhile - or not at all - that will not lessen my love for him. There is nothing he can do that would make me *not* love him. I may miss him, but I won't stop wanting to be involved in his life on his own terms.

This perspective has really opened my eyes. I can see my Father's love for me in much the same way that I love my son.

While I'm on the net, just to let you know, I am dating now and things are going even better than I ever expected. I'm still working at the same place and I'm pretty possitive that I will get on full time with benefits in the next few months. Well, I will keep you informed okay!!

"Angels on Temple Square" 30 Dec 2004
Some of you who have contributed to the Book 2 of "Angels on Temple Square" have asked when it will be published. We have republished the first book...with a few corrections and a new cover. The publisher wants to market it better and then publish the next book. So it will probably not be on the shelves for nearly a year from now. We had no idea about the book business when we started this and since we are novices it is taking a long time to accomplish getting it out to the public. The response has been great though and we are excited about the next venture. President and Sister Winwood wrote that they were taking the first book with them to England as they consider it a great resource for new missionaries. When we hear those kind of testimonials to the value of the book we are so glad that we did it. We hope that all of you have had a chance to read it and if you want to contribute to book 2 it isn't too late even though we have a full manuscript at present...we would welcome any outstanding stories that any of you would like to send us. Thanks...Sister Goodrich and Sister Winters.
