Stories: A Lesson that I Learned

One of the most important lessons in my life I learned in Chesapeake. I was under President Ritchie and was a zone leader with two wonderful companions. We were on fire! The work was going forth in a big way, thanks to several families that were handing out "Our Heavenly Father's Plan" cassettes and following up on them. This was the only time in my mission that we had more people to teach than we had time for. Anyway, in the midst of this spiritual high, we were told by a priesthood leader that we were not to proselyte in the ward. We were told that what was needed was to reactivate the members that had been baptized years ago and not to convert any new members. We were outraged! We were so mad that we went over to a member's home (that was also in the Stake and Mission Presidency) and began telling he and his family how wrong that leader was. After a short while, this wonderful man taught me the lesson of my life. He pulled us quietly out in the hall of his home, and told us......."Elders, I know you are frustrated about this event, but you must know what you are doing. My family idolizes missionaries, and we live here in this ward. You will all go home in a few months and live wherever you are from, but we live here. What you have done in there is to put doubt into the minds of my wife and children about their priesthood leader's inspiration. We are commanded to obey, honor and respect those leaders, and now you have made that more difficult for our family. It is ok for you to express your feelings, but not to them." I was devistated to think that I had been a part of that! There has been some serious repenting since then. I learned that to honor is to obey, and that a priesthood leader is only as effective as those that follow him allow him to be by following his counsel. Lesson Learned and Practiced.
