Estimados amigos:
Guido Lucas

While I was there (Dec 1981 - Apr 1983) I realized we were at about the same parallel (33rd) in Bs As Sur as that of my hometown (Ft Worth TX). Not surprisingly, the weather is quite similar in both places, except there's no tornadoes in Bs As (menos mal!) -- but yes to hot summers, and humid cold winters that occasionally drop to 15-20 degrees (fairly cold if you don't have an external heat source, like a kerosene heater, or central heat).
As far as latitude lines, this link might give an idea of comparable weather from Argentina vs. the U.S. It looks like the mission (from just south of the Capital down to not quite the bottom of the province) is about between the 32nd and 39th parallel. In the US, the 32nd parallel runs thru central texas, and the 39th parallel looks like it's as far north as southern Colorado or Kansas. So, in the same mission, depending on where you end up, you could get a fairly brisk winter. Tandil and Madriaga and Olavarria were the place to be if you liked a good cold winter. Even at the north end, in Chacabuco/Lanus Este, it was chilly.

I would definitely bring a sleeping bag; it gets ridiculously cold during the winter, and the heaters provided by the mission are pretty much useless (at least they were when I was there from 2002-2004).

I admit that it's been 25 years since I left the BA South mission, but I would think with global warming and all, it shouldn't be any colder than in my day. The humidity makes it seem cold, but it rarely got below freezing. Most of the pensiones didn't have central heat, but they had plenty of blankets, so I never needed a sleeping bag, and I always felt pretty toasty. Your mission should send you a list of what you need. If it doesn't say sleeping bag, I wouldn't bother. Your luggage will be bursting as it is.

So the sleeping bag has to be packed in the luggage??! Seems like it would take a lot of room. Can it be checked seperately?

Ryan Bowler. Listen to the letter you received. The coldest winter I have ever experienced is on a cold, damp, windy day in Argentina. It is a damp cold and it can be difficult to keep warm. Definitely bring a sleeping bag, several pairs of thermal garments, hats and gloves. You will most likely need a good sleeping bag in the winter. In the summer, it can get very warm and humid. You won't want to sleep in your sleeping bag then, but will need sheets to help combat the mosquitos. I would bring a set, and not leave it to there. Your companions there will help guide you surviving the rest of the adventures there.
Best of luck and God Bless.

Hello everyone, I was just called to this mission for arrival into the mtc on January 2nd, 2008. I am a little confused about what the weather will be like. The call tells me to bring a scarf and gloves along with sweaters and thermal garments. I thought that it was going to be fairly warm all the time with some rain. If anyone can give me a hint to this, that would be awesome.
I was also asked to bring 2 fitted sheets as well as a sleepingbag with a linning inside. I find this odd to have fitted sheets plus a sleeping bag with linning, does anyone know why this was asked for? And is it possible and smart just to buy it when i get there??
Thanks,
Ryan Bowler

It was good to hear from Elder Mangum (he taught some of us at the LTM - first Argentine class, 1962 - he would have served during the first part of President Snelgrove's leadership). Yes, most of us "old hands" are still around. Many have served or are serving missions (again). I know Tony Shumway recently returned from service as a mission president and I recently enjoyed a visit with Jim and Irene Lunt and with Richard and Carolyn Wilson who are all serving in Santiago, Chile. Several others live in Arizona and I enjoy seeing them occasionally.
During a recent visit to Buenos Aires, it was wonderful to see the long prayed-for temple, and to hear of the improving economy in Argentina.

As there anyone left (alive) who served under President Snelgrove in the early 1960's? That is so far back he's not even listed in the Mission Presidents' list! It's a pleasure to read of all the growth and progress over the last 40-50 years. As we old-timers always say, "we knew it would happen!" Thanks to you who made it happen.

LDS QUOTE: |
"You are a great army of returned missionaries. Go forward with new zeal and determination, and through your example shine the light of the gospel in this troubled world. This is the Lord's work in which we are engaged. God lives. Jesus is the Christ. We belong to His Church. This is my witness to you in the name of Jesus Christ, amen."
