Drunks and Charging Horses 31 Dec 2010
Drunks and Charging Horses By Mel Borup One rainy night after a visit and gospel discussion to a family on the outskirts of the town of Maipú, Elder Carroll and I were slowly making our way home along the muddy rain filled street carefully picking our way through the puddles and torrents. As we walked, we talked about the day’s events and we planned for the next day and week, we heard the approach of two men on horseback. As they came closer it was apparent to us they were both drunk. No words were uttered, but the two tried to run over us with their horses. We stood our ground and were certain that the horses saw us and would attempt to avoid us even if their master’s intended to do us harm. At that point it was blind faith mixed with fear, similar I suppose to that of Peter as he had walked on the sea and then doubted his ability to do so (see Mathew 14:27-31). Christ rescued him and then chastised him saying “O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?” After the first pass, out of the fog and rain, again they came at full gallop, narrowly missing us. The third time was so close I pushed my hand with force into the neck of one of the horses nearly falling back myself, then the horse reared, nearly throwing his master. After that, the phantom men and horses disappeared. During the episode, we were in mortal fear. It happened so fast we hardly had time take another breath or even to utter a silent prayer, we relied on the Lord and his angels attending us as we faced these frightening prospects. I have no doubt that we were attended by angels that night as we stood our ground. Sometimes there is no time to retreat. Things happen quickly. It seems that God does not want us to challenge him or to put ourselves in jeopardy, but there are times when you must stand your ground and have faith in the Lord and his angels knowing they are always present and that it will work out well.

LDS QUOTE:
"You are a great army of returned missionaries. Go forward with new zeal and determination, and through your example shine the light of the gospel in this troubled world. This is the Lord's work in which we are engaged. God lives. Jesus is the Christ. We belong to His Church. This is my witness to you in the name of Jesus Christ, amen."
- Elder L. Tom Perry
