Journal Entry April 19th 1992 01 Jun 2003
Today is Easter Sunday, but nothing special is going on. It's the second Easter Iv'e spent here in Argentina. Holidays just don't seem like holidays, in the mission field. Yesterday Elder Talbot and I went to take some pictures of Quilmes, but to the the pictures we needed, we had to go down in a very poor neighborhood. While we were taking the pictures I saw two young men coming towards us. I could feel that they were up to no good, so I told Elder Talbot that we should hurry, and get out of the area. The two guys were already fairly close to us, so Elder Talbot rode his bike on one side of the street and I on the other. The young men tried to stop us by yelling at us and waving us down but we just kept on peddling. That was until the guy on my side pulled out a gun and pointed it at me. Luckly the other fellow on Elder Talbots sided did not have a weapon so Elder Talbot kept on going even though the guy picked up some rather large rocks and tried throwing them at him. He was lucky and got away from them, but I of course had to stop due to the gun in my face. I was asked to hand over my money in my pockets, but I only had a few coins that amounted to about 20 cents. I had $220.00 in my shirt pocket tucked inside my white bible because after taking pictures we were going to pick up two traditional Argentine lamb skin blankets that I was going to use during the upcoming winter and take home as a sovunier, so I was really hoping that he would not ask for the items in my shirt pocket. Needless to say, he asked for it, but I just acted like I didn't understand so he left it alone. Then the other guy came over and took my bike from me and started to take off. Then the guy with the gun asked me for my watch, but I told him that I needed it more than he did. When he saw that I was standing up to him he just ran off with the guy on the bike. It was a pretty scarey moment, but I was thankful for the protection from the Lord. It's not uncommon for this type of thing to happen in this mission, and it is really sad to see how desperate many of these people are. The bad part is that there were several other people on the street just watching what was going on, and acted like it was nothing. I guess much of the problem stems from the lack of education. The mission will buy me a new bike, so I don't really have to worry about that much. I guess it's a blessing that no one got hurt. We were just lucky to get out of there with everyting of value.

LDS QUOTE:
"You are a great army of returned missionaries. Go forward with new zeal and determination, and through your example shine the light of the gospel in this troubled world. This is the Lord's work in which we are engaged. God lives. Jesus is the Christ. We belong to His Church. This is my witness to you in the name of Jesus Christ, amen."
- Elder L. Tom Perry
Ensign, Nov. 2001
