Procura-se p/ Elderes ! ! ! 23 Apr 2005
Hello,

Aguardo respostas.

Thank You

Ribeirao 15 Jan 2005
If I remember correctly, it refers to a small stream or brook. I don't know if that's where they got the name of the city from, but that's what the word means.

Meaning of the word 'ribeirao' 15 Jan 2005
Can anyone there tell me the meaning of the word "Ribeirao". "Preto" I know, "Black".

My father was born there and my grandson is working on a heritage project for school. He has asked that question and I don't know the answer.

I would appreciate any information you can furnish me.

Thank you!

Procuro grandes amigos 14 Jan 2005
Prezados Membros da LDS.

Bom dia.

Entao comecei a observar estes mocos. Recebi todas as palestras deles. Li o livro de Mórmon. Não me batizei.
Eu havia me formado, estava namorando e me casaria em 7/maio/1.999.

Visa 31 Oct 2004
Hi all,
My son, Ben Andrus, leaves Nov. 2 also for the Brazil MTC. He just received his Visa/tickets etc. by FedEx on Thursday, Oct. 28th. Another missionary in our Stake who went to Brazil a couple of weeks ago received his the day before he was to leave. Good luck! Hopefully they will come. I'm getting excited and nervous now that it's so close. Royalyn

visas 30 Oct 2004
I have also been waiting for 3 months to leave. I go out hopefully on Nov. 2nd as well. I called the travel office on Friday and they received my visa on Friday, so I am supposed to get all of my stuff on Monday and leave tuesday. But if not then, I will be leaving Wednesday. So I'm pretty sure they have everything working out for all of us.

RE: Visa's and cameras 28 Oct 2004
Kathleen,
I was wondering the same thing about the camera ordeal. My son is supposed to leave on the 2nd of November as well and I haven't heard anything about his visa, plane ticket or name tags either and i am getting very concerned. Thank you for the tip, I hope they get it resolved soon as my son has also been waiting the long 3 months to go. Good luck to you and your son! With Love, Chantel

cameras 26 Oct 2004
My son would like me to inquire about whether it is better to bring a 35mm camera or a digital camera to his mission. Is there means to process chips from the digital and what are the odds of it getting stolen?
Thank you for your response.
Evan is supposed to leave next Tuesday, but there is a hold up on all the Visas. Apparently someone in the consulat in Brazil doesn't like Mormon missionaries. Please pray for a softening of their hearts. Evan is very anxious to get started. He has been waiting now for 3 months to go.

Christmas 30 Aug 2004
Jacaline,
My son, Elder Matt Briggs, has been out a year. Last year we sent packages addresses to "Elder Natal" with socks, white shirts (size 15" or 15 1/2") with candy and any other goody you could think of. Are you on our missionary moms email group? What is your Elder's name? maybe my list isn't up to date.

Christmas presents 29 Aug 2004
Hi Everyone!

A couple of weeks ago someone mentioned that it was getting close to October which is when we should be mailing our packages to our missionaries. I was just wanting to get some ideas to send. My son has been in the CTM for almost 3 weeks now, I miss him so much! but anyway!! What kinds of things are you alls ending? Also, how do we find out about any missionaries who may not have family support? We would like to be able to send these guys something. I can't stand the thought of them not having anything to open for Christmas.

Please write back with any ideas.

Pictures of Current Missionaries in the MTC 09 Aug 2004
A missionary couple in the São Paulo MTC has put together a mission website and it shows lots of pictures of the MTC, including the cafeteria, the labs, several current missionaries, and more. It is a great site, check it out!

Suits and PANTS 29 Jul 2004
I had (and used) one suit. The jacket was too heavy - don't make that mistake. It's much harder to wash. There is VERY little air conditioning in Brazil, and none in the chapels where the suits will be uesd - and it's HOT sometimes.

Pants get worn through very quickly, including the pants that came with the jacket. It's best to buy several pairs that match precisely (or at least close). Keep the reference swatch that comes with the jacket to find pants for him when he writes to tell you that the knees/crotch have worn out of all of his pants and could you please send him new ones that match his jacket? Things wear out fast when you walk all day. I went through ~6 pairs of pants (no, it's not recommended to carry that many starting out. :)

The reason that matching is so important is that while businessmen and waiters look fine in a dark sport jacket and khakis, a missionary looks like a buffoon. :)

Also on topic - buy socks that are light and wash/dry easily. All of one kind. Prefereably that don't release dye (handwashing in a bucket, remember). Not even thick socks can prevent the initial blisters and foot pain.

Oh yeah, bring moleskin. Lots. And some more to share. :)

Bag clarifications 29 Jul 2004
Maybe some more recent alums can clarify better as to the present president's preferences, but I'd suggest he bring a cheap fabric shoulder bag and use it for the first little while - that way he can see what his companion and other missionaries use... and how they use it. Then he can buy one cheap (3 real/dollar exchange) in Brazil - there are many good choices there.

This is a good choice to make in an informed way - he's carrying this thing all day every day, rain and shine. It has to fit everything he needs during the day (several copies of the Book of Mormon, scriptures, teaching materials, pen, suitcoat sometimes, etc), but not be so big or bulky that it tires him out. If it's a briefcase, he'll want to choose it for appearance and strength, and he'll be able to sit on it while talking to people sitting on their doorsteps. :)

Plus, he may be one of those who carries an umbrella (you eventually whether the rain bothers you enough to weigh yourself down "just in case") and the size of that will also inform the choice. And on and on.

Summary - plan on buying a final bag there - get a temp for now.

what to bring 28 Jul 2004
My son only took 1 suit which seems to be sufficient. He also took several pairs of nice dress slacks which are washable. They generally only wear their suits when they are traveling or attending mission meetings. It is very warm there with high humidity. He purchased a nice shoulder bag at one of the large office supply stores. It's nice to have it to take with them as they can put their scriptures, etc. in it and use it as their carry on bag on the plane.

Things to bring 27 Jul 2004
I have read through the comments in the guestbook and still do not have a clear understanding. Does my son bring one suit or two? Does he bring a shoulder bag type briefcase, or does he purchase it in Brazil? Thank you for your help.
