This is true - except for shoes. If your son has shoes of size 11 or greater, he will have a VERY hard time finding good shoes. Beware.
Alden
Good point Alden... I would agree. Make sure that you try out and see how well your shoes work beforehand. That means wearing them for more than just two Sundays before you go. Try walking around the block a few times in them before you leave for the mission field. And take a couple pairs. Maybe keep one pair nice as long as possible until the others wear out, and then switch to the good ones.

Each mission is different. What ever he needs he will be able to purchase in Brazil probably cheaper than here in the US. In my mission we used brief cases; however, the brief cases were a different style than what is typical in here at home. Again, my recommendation is to buy it in Brasil.
I served in the Campinas mission and then in the Riberao Preto mission. In the Campinas mission on rare occasion it got cold enough for a light sweater. I'm from Phoenix so 60 degrees is cold. If you go to these missions, you won't need a coat. Any clothing that you need can be purchased in Brazil for cheaper than here at the US. |

My son will enter the MTC in Sao Paulo on August 11th. He leaves here on the 10th. We are going to miss him so much, he is our oldest child.
I was reading some of the comments and noticed one about the shoulder bag. Did anyone ever figure out what kind of bag you should actually take?! This is one we have been wondering about and also whether it is 1 or 2 suits as we have heard both!
Also, does it ever get cold there?!
Thanks for this website. |

I was curious about the rules of having a guitar in the field. I know that they are not allowed in the MTC for certain reasons, but a friend told me that the people love to hear missionaries sing and do musical stuff and I love to play the guitar and sing and my parents were willing to ship my guitar to me once i got in the field, but we weren't sure what the current president's philosophy on guitars in the field is. If anyone has some info on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

My boyfriend just left for this mission on Jan. 13 2004 and I miss him like crazy already. Everyone's praying for you Dillon, Good Luck! I love you. |

The more and more time passes, the more and more I miss rice & beans and 'cheese bread'. The mission was great. I think the only thing that has topped it so far has been being sealed to a beautiful worthy young woman in our Lord's Temple. I sure miss all you guys a lot and wouldn't mind 'chokitando' a little with all you fubekas! Drop me a line feras. Peace out from the cold wet NorthWest. |

Dear Alumni,
I am a student at BYU Hawaii participating in a research project on Language Maintenance with Dr. Lynne Hansen. We hope that our research can help missionaries better learn the language and retain it when they go home. As a participant, we would like to do a phone interview and have you fill out an internet survey. They should take no longer than 25 minutes each. In order to participate in this research, you MUST BE AN ENGLISH NATIVE SPEAKER. If you would like to contribute with our research project, please email me and let me know WHEN YOU SERVED YOUR MISSION. I will contact you with further information.
Your help is much appreciated,
Livia S. Orikasa |
