The Sign 14 Sep 2004
I was serving in Lake Elsinore with one Elder Chis Shipley (Faith and Trust*). It was a hard time because we were running out of things to do. The same old tracting and OYM-ing was not working. We had plenty of success in the ward, but now it was time to find some new people. With this frustration on my mind I prayed that night "I want to me the best missionary I can be...but I need your help." No amen...just a statement. I mean I was really frustrated. The next day Shipley and I left to go do some street contacting. As we pulled up to the predetermined local I got even more frustrated. AHHH!! This is a waste of time!! So after we sat there for a while (Shipley not really knowing what to tell me) we just decided to do what we had planned. Out of the car on to the sidewalk. As my foot hit the concrete, the spirit kicked me in the back of the head. REVALATION IS GREAT!! With this new idea and the assurance of the spirit I almost ran to the printing shop just down the street. When I got in I asked if they printed signs...they said no. As my companion caught up I was walking out. Shipley (bless his soul, I love him so much) asked what I was doing?!?! I told him to just follow me. The printing shop told me of a sign shop on the other end of the street. So we nearly sprinted there. We entered into Sign-o-rama and asked the proprietor how much such and such size sign would be. He told us $20. "Deal! Yellow with black letters. This is what I want it to say: ASK A MORMON ANYTHING" Shipley’s mouth hit the floor. I too was worried what kind of response this sign would produce, but I was comforted by the spirit that I was ready...lets do it. The next day we went to pick up our new tool-o-teaching from sign-o-rama. We were both ready and excited. "ASK A MORMAN ANYTHING" the sign guy fixed it a few hours later. So with a small stand from the building. We set up the sign and waved to the passer byres. The short of the story is that in a few hours, we taught 8 discussions and placed 12 BOM's. We got allsorts of questions, like what are the winning lotto numbers, where’s a good place to eat. Then there were the questions that someone would have never asked had we just showed up at there door like, what’s the deal with this Joe Smith, or is that book [The Book of Mormon] really true. People having real intent spent hours standing with us on Main St. feeling the spirit. Truly one of the greatest experiences of my mission. I learned that if we but use our talents in hand with the Lords will, we can do great even marvelous things. Amen. The story is better when I tell it in person. For those who know me, you get what I mean. There should be a picture of us in the picture section. *inside joke
