The Mountains

(The Mountain Top Mission Song)

Words and Music by Merrill Bradshaw Transposed by Sister Curtis

Let me go to the mountains - Where the air sparkles clear,
Let me breath of its' purity - That I may hear,

Let me stand on the mountain top - Let me fathom the day,
Let me live here with nature - 'Til I find my own way,

Let me go to the mountains - Where the ground angles steep,
Let me fight to the summit - and bring peace to my sleep,

In the trees - There is peace,
In the jutting rocks - Bridled strength,
In the lakes - God's reflection,
In the sky - Heaven's space.

Let me go to the Mountains - Just to walk and to see,
Let me find God's sweet spirit - and his mission for me.

2nd verse words by President Preece

Let me go to the mountains - There to publish his name,
Let me search out the Lord's elect - Their souls to claim,

Let me follow the Prophet Seer - Let me lengthen my stride,
Let me increase my tempo - Faith in him to abide,

Let me work with commitment - Show my love for the Lord,
Taking flight with the eagles - All temptations endured,

In my heart - There is hope,
On my countenance - Cheerfulness,
With an eye - To his glory,
Reap the fields - Full with harvest.

Let me go to the mountains - Having answered the call,
Let me finish my mission - After giving my all.

History behind the song supplied by Steve Rolandelli

I was assigned to the mission home at the time President Preece was searching for a mission song, early in 1976. Someone (it might have been Sister Curtis) had a recording of The Mountains and I know that Sister Curtis had the sheet music to it. (This was the time when we had an entire district of sisters in Burnaby and New Westminster, and Sister Curtis was the DL.) There were a few other song submissions, as I recall elders coming into the old ballroom at the 5055 Connaught Mission Home and banging out their ideas on the piano in there or on the grand piano in the living room. But once President Preece heard this one he knew he'd found what he wanted.

Anyway, president Preece asked four of us elders (can't recall the others, but we weren't all from the mission home) to learn the harmonies and introduce the song at a zone meeting or maybe an April leadership conference. I remember that the internal lines were pretty difficult, but we finally got it together with the help of Sister Curtis on piano.

President Preece produced the second verse a few weeks later and as far as I know, it's all his own work, with a healthy does of quotes from President Kimball.
