Chilean drought 06 Dec 2006
I remember that drought well. I arrived in Chile in January of 1968, and the country had already been suffering through the drought for a year or so. I remember the rolling brown-outs in Santiago, to save water. I also remember then Elder Hinckley coming to dedicate the chapel in La Cisterna. I was serving in San Miguel at the time, so I attended the dedication. I remember Elder Hinckley asking the Lord to send rain, and I don't remember if it was that night, or the next day, the heavens just opened up and poured. You couldn't cross the street without stepping into water that was ankle deep. My companion and I were trying to cross Gran Avenida. We just made it to the island and a bus driver saw us and head straight for us. He sent a wall of water over our heads and we were drenched from head to toe. The members we visited asked us if we had been in swimming. I felt like I had. It rained for days. I knew then that Elder Hinckley was one man who really had some pull with the Lord. I told my companion, Elder Layman, that we needed to get President Burton to get Elder Hinckley back down here to turn off the water. I heard that Elder Hinckley did the exact same thing, years later at the dedication of the Santiago Temple. Once again, Chile was suffering through an extended drought, and once again it was Elder Hinckley who got the Lord to turn on the water. As I understand it, people saw the clouds forming as soon as they walked out from the temple.
