Stories: Earthquake

| During a district conference in what was then the new chapel in Nunoa (probably 1965), as President Beecroft was speaking, we heard what sounded like a freight train coming right for us. The building began to groan and sway. People were screaming and running for windows and doors. Sister Beecroft stood up and calmly took President Beecroft's arm. I was sitting with Sister Harding and her family. I was frozen with fear. Sister Harding poked me and said, "Sing something!!" The only hymn that came to mind in Spanish was "Para siempre Dios este con vos." So I started singing and quickly everyone joined in. The congregation continued singing hymns as the fear and the earthquake subsided, with President and Sister Beecroft standing calmly at the podium. I have always been grateful for Sister Harding's quick thinking, and amused that, in my mindless terror, my choice of hymn was "God Be with You Til We Meet Again." |
