Help 18 May 2005
Dear Friends & Family,

It has been a while since I have contacted many of you and quite a while since I have used my email. I come to each of you in a time of need. Many of you may not know that my wife and I are getting a divorce. My wife has fallen in love with another man and has decided to continue her life without me. As the divorce proceedings are starting, it is becoming quite apparent that this is going to be a long and hard battle. I have come to terms with my wife's decision to continue life with out me, but in her process of moving on, it has become apparent that she wants me to have as little to no contact with my children as possible. She is asking the court to grant her possession of all physical belongings and full custody of the children. As you can tell, this has had serious repercussions on me and on my children. I currently only see my children every other weekend and it has been very hard on all of us.

The reason that I come to each of you now is to extend the invitation to anybody that may feel desirous to help keep my family as much together as possible. My attorney has told me that the only way Hannah will be able to take my children away would be to convince the court that I was an unfit father to my children. I have been advised to seek out character witnesses in my behalf to show that I am a loving father to my children and that they need to be a part of my life. The reason that I am not calling each of you is because I don't want anybody to feel obligated to write a letter in my behalf, but only to extend the invitation to those that would like to. Any letter written in my behalf will help increase the chances of my having the children remain in my life. If any of you feel inclined to write in my behalf, then please send any written letters to my attorney: Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake, Attn: Mary Pat Cashman, 205 North 400 West, Salt Lake City, Utah 84103. Any letter needs to be notarized by a notary public before submitting. A notary public can be found at any banking institution and most banks will not charge for this service if you are a patron of their bank.

Again, I want to remind you that these will not come to me and I will never see them and will not know who has written and who hasn't. Please don't feel obligated by any means as I do not wish to cause anyone to choose sides between Hannah and me. Many of you are friends with both Hannah and me and I can only imagine the trial and confusion that you face in deciding how to continue your friendship with us. That being said, I also want to encourage those of you that do feel inclined to write, to do so before June 1st, as that is the first court date. As every letter will count, and as I am limited in my knowledge of every friends email address, I ask of each of you to look at the people above who have received this email and if you know of anybody that you believe would like to help and who is not listed above, to please forward this message on to them as well.

It is too late for me to win my wife back, but I still have a chance to ensure that my children be a part of their father's life and remain as close of a family as possible. Thank you all for your friendships through the years. I consider each of you a member of my family and if there is ever anything that I can do for you, I invite you to let me know. May God be with and bless each and every one of you.

Love your friend,
Tobin Lay
