To Our Most Wonderful Missionaries
In The World

Sister Acosta and I know that Heavenly Father loves everyone of us. He knows us individually, just as we have come to know each one of you. Yes! His beloved son, Jesus Christ, lives, Yes! we have seen His miracles on behalf of His children. Only now can we really appreciate the trials each of you went through as you walked the streets of Costa Rica as missionaries of Jesus Christ. Now, as we walk the streets of Belize in the hot humid temperatures of 109F, drenching with sweat, crossing the flooded streets created by their monsoon rains, with our umbrellas giving way to the powerful winds, snapping over our heads and arriving home exhausted wet, tired and hungry---we think of you and your sufferings.
We envision in our minds the trials each of you went through in your missionary experiences (like trying to keep your shoes clean). It was wonderful being a Mission President, but oh how different it is being a missionary on the front lines, experiencing the rewards of success and the trials of failure. Yes, now we can really appreciate all that you did for the people of Costa Rica. Thank you for the service you gave to the Lord Jesus Christ. He loves you for what you did. He will be even more proud of you as you continue to serve him and develop into powerful leaders.
I recall that on many occasions, during my interviews with you, I sensed the love you had for the people you were teaching. As you came into the interview room, I notice how sad you were. You sat down, and with shoulders slumped you just stared at me. I asked; “Did you lose one?” You just stared at me and as tears began to build up in your eyes, you would say, “Why, president, why did they not want to continue listening to the message?—I lost them.” The tears began to flow. I just sat there, waiting for your emotions to subside, and then I said; “Oh , your devastation says it all—you loved them the way the Lord loves you.” That was what Elder Jeffery R. Holland was trying to teach each of us - that we must feel devastated when we lose an investigator. For when we lose an investigator, we lose generations of individuals.

Let me share a happy experience with you. I recall the first time we visited Ana and Juan. They had been less-active for years. The Branch President had taken us there on a Monday night and he was in a hurry to get home to his family for FHE. After the introduction, the Branch President departed. We visited the family sitting outside under their big avocado tree. Juan had been working on his car and was barefooted, wearing torn pants and a dirty tee-shirt. His wife. Ana, was a simple woman dressed nicely, however had been sick for quite some time. As sister Acosta carried the conversation with Ana, I turned my attention to Juan. Thinking about his sick wife, I asked him if he had the Melchesidec Priesthood. He said yes. So I proceeded to do an extensive worthiness interview with him. In lowered voices we discussed his wife’s medical necessities. I felt satisfied that Juan, although not active, had not done anything to have jeopardized his priesthood authority. Therefore, as we discussed the principle of faith, I asked if he would like to administer to his wife. He looked at me in disbelief and said, yes he would. He asked that I give the blessing and that he anoint. Thus, it was done, catching Ana by surprise. At the end of the blessing, I noticed him wiping his eyes in the darkness of the night. As we departed, Sister Acosta could envision Juan and Ana hugging each other in the darkness of the night as they found the spirit of the gospel once again. They are now active and she is feeling much better. Their smiles tell it all, when we see them in church.

On a lighter side, I recalled one hot sunny day. Sister Acosta and I had rushed out of our little apartment to do God’s work without our water bottles. It was in the morning and we felt that we could handle a few hours on the street. A short time later, walking the incline of a narrow rocky street, I noticed, the redness of her face, her faltering steps, and completely drenched in sweat. I said to her—“Sister Acosta you are suffering from sun stroke. Lets get home quickly. As we arrived, she stuck her head under the cold water faucet and said she could almost hear her head sizzle. We both agreed that we would never do that again, tracting in such hot conditions without water bottles is not a smart thing to do.

Another time, as we walked in the dark night, we noticed that the cars with the headlights were coming to close to us, so we moved over towards the edge of the shoulder of the road on the lose gravel. We always hold hands when we walk together. Then all of a sudden just as sister Acosta was by my side, she was gone in a flash. She had slipped from my hand and had fallen into a ditch about 18 -22 inches deep. I caught her and tried to hold her tight. I pulled to keep her from falling all the way down. She yelled, “my shoe, my shoe is in the ditch.” Fortunately, she did not break any bones or hurt herself too seriously, just some soreness---then we laughed.

Sister Acosta and I have been called to labor as “Leadership & Reactivation” couple. When we arrived, there was one other senior missionary couple, however they departed three months later. They have not been replaced. So now we cover the whole country of Belize. Belize is a small country that is about 80 miles wide from east to west, and about 120 miles north to south. However the roads are narrow and not so good. We do not have a car, so we use the public transportation. The country population is about 380,000 total. We live in the west bordering Guatemala. We live among the Mayan ruins. When we provide leadership workshops in the east or the north, we spend up to a total of to 9-10 hours on the bus going up and back; and let me tell you, for one who has a flat or no “bum” at all, that is painful! We leave at 6:30 am and return home at 8:30pm. But for the Lord, that is nothing. Sound familiar? The blessings are endless.

We testify to you, that the gospel of Jesus Christ is true; “He aqui, soy discipulo de Jesuscristo, el Hijo de Dios. He sido llamado por El, para declarar su palabra entre los de su pueblo, a fin de que alcansen la vida eternal.” (3 Nephi 5: 13)

We love you. Each experience we have, reminds us of each of you. Remember, who you are. You are God’s warriors, and Jesus Christ’s disciples. We look forward when we can see you at our missionary reunion in April of 2010. So save your pennies, so you can be there------Oh, and don’t forget to bring your wives and children. Girlfriends are welcomed also. J

Con todo nuestro amor, President & Sister Acosta

I'm interested in finding out information about how the church is doing on the Islands of San Blas where I served as a missionary in 1982. Are there still chapels and a district there?

Costa Rica Cruise 20 Mar 2008
My husband and I are interested in going on a cruise through the Panama Canal next year. Does anyone know of one that stops in Costa Rica? I'm also especially looking for one that might stop in Carti Tupile, San Blas where I served in 1982. I've researched it a little and can't find any info on a ship stopping at the islands like they used to when I was a missionary. I'd be glad to hear from someone who knows.

Hello 02 Dec 2007
Just got back from a week vacation in Costa Rica. It was wonderful to see the missionaries and the mission again.

They just had one of their biggest baptism months in a long time. Something like 135 in a single month for the mission.

The Zapote ward said to tell everyone that servered there "hello".

mission home 03 Oct 2007
I served in Costa Rica in 1961 for a short while before transfering back to Guatemala. It was the Central American Mission then.
Can someone tell me where the Mission Home and Office are at this time. I'm guessing San Jose but if someone can give me the address (location and mailing) I would appreciate it. Haven't been there since '61 and would like to go back, for a visit. We worked out of the chapel across the street from 'La Casa Amarilla" the Presidentof Costa Rica's office.
Thanks
