Our friend and companion, Ricardo Villacis, died in Quito on May 27, 2008 from chronic liver failure. He is survived by his wife, Jackie, a son, Ricardo, and a daughter, Michelle. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Brian.
Ricardo served in the Guayaquil mission from 1982-84. He was branch president in Pinas, and also served in Cisne, Garcia Moreno, and Portoviejo.
As my second companion, he taught me the finer points of Spanish and how to teach the gospel with conviction. He taught me to walk in the middle of the street instead of under the portales, and how to hide a suspicious salchicha in your sock so you don't get sick trying to eat it. He also taught me how to play futbolito/ indor, which has remained a passion in my life to this day. He was an avid fan of Aucas.
Ricardo graduated from university in Quito, married Jackeline Rodriguez, and worked for the Church offices in Quito for many years in resource management. He was a bishop in Quito (I think Barrio La Gasca) during the difficult economic times of the 90's, and worked hard to teach his ward members vocational skills such as tailoring so that they could support their families. In recent years, his family moved to the suburbs and started a business building glass display cases. The business is very successful and ships them all over Ecuador. Due to his illness, Jackie has run the business over the past months.
I will miss talking to my comp over the phone or e-mailing him about the latest Ecuador national team game, or just remembering our times in Garcia Moreno. We've lost a great man and a great servant of the Lord.
