RMDatabase Information

Overview

The RMdB4 scripts, developed by Eric Huber, have been written based on scripts originally developed by Adam Bayless and Doug Schubert. Curtis Jewell has also written a version based on version 3 that can "plug-in" to various back-end databases including PostgresSQL. (Contact Curtis directly for more information regarding his version - cjewell@mission.net)

The intent of these scripts is to provide a simple database that can be utilized by other mission page maintainers allowing each to customize various aspects of their database pages. The version 4 database is nothing more than ASCII--delimited files and require no special database engine to implement. There are no index files required either and this allows for more search capabilities but also requires that the tables generally stay small in the number of records they contain.

Lists with more than two to three thousand alumni registered should look more at using Curtis's version with a Postgres or other SQL back-end (however, most mission pages would not find this to be a problem--this type of database is ideally suited for mission pages).

New for Version 4

RMdB 4.x is a result of comments and requests received from users of version 3.x from years of use. The following list represents just some of the enhancements in version 4 (for a more detailed explanation, see the README file link):

  1. Integrated Administrator functionality
  2. Template Controlled Pages
  3. Database Export Capabilities
  4. Security Event Logging
  5. Modified Search Functionality
  6. Custom Settings Maintenance

Usage and Requirements

The scripts are available to download (see above) at no cost to LDS Mission Network webmasters only. They have been developed and used in a Unix/Linux environment but may run under other environments although I can't guarantee that they will. In order to be able to run the scripts, you must have cgi-bin access through your provider.

To see a working copy of the script and the database click on the link above. Feel free to play around with it and add or change whatever information and settings that you would like to. The administrator password is "master". NOTE: This sample database is reset every morning to the default values - so don't worry if you mess it up. On the same note, if you attempt to try out the sample database and it is all screwed up beyond recognition, come back the next day and try it again
