President Hansen Passing 06 Dec 2009
M. Keith Hansen, 76, who presided over the Florida Jacksonville Mission from 1998-2001, who resided in Gresham, Ore., died Nov. 3, 2009, while vacationing on Maui.

Gresham dentist and former City Councilor M. Keith Hansen died Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the age of 76 while scuba diving in Maui, Hawaii.

The cause of the accident has not been determined.

A funeral service for Hansen will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 12300 S.E. 312th Ave., Boring. A viewing will be held at the church prior to the funeral from 9 to 10:25 a.m.

Hansen was known for his habit of service to his church, his profession and his community.

“He was one of my heroes,” said Gresham travel agent Doug Walker, “a dentist, friend and a wonderful family person.”

Former Gresham Mayor Charles Becker said Hansen served on the Gresham City Council in a time when local business owners, educators and physicians took the positions, not out of political ambition, but because it was expected.

“He accepted responsibility and stepped forward,” Becker said. “He lived his faith.”

Hansen was a meticulous record keeper and maintained the lists that proved his activities. He also listed every car he ever owned, beginning with a 1948 Chevrolet in 1950, and every home he lived in.

“I remember one time that I came home and Mom was typing it, and she said she was really mad at him,” remembers son Scott, also a Gresham dentist. “I asked why, and she said she just realized how much he was not at home.”

Hansen served on Gresham City Council from 1977 to 1980. In addition, he served many more years on the planning commission, the budget committee and the fire department advisory council.

He had 25 years of adult involvement with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as both commissioner and chairman of the Thunderbird District, and was a member of the Gresham Rotary for more than 40 years, serving as president in the 1970s.

“He went home for lunch every day for a 10-minute nap. If he didn’t get it, he fell asleep at Rotary. He was fined many times for that,” said his son.

He was born in Pocatello, Idaho, to Lola McBride (Browning) and Milton Dale Hansen. He was raised in St. Anthony, Idaho, and married his high school sweetheart, Carol Siddoway, on March 27, 1953, in Idaho Falls.

After finishing his Army service in Missouri, they moved to Oregon where he graduated from the University of Oregon Dental School in 1960. The Hansens then moved to Gresham where he started his practice.

He served as president of the American Society of Dentistry for Children, was Oregon General Dentist of the year in 1977 and earned his master’s degree in the Academy of General Dentistry.

When his wife became ill with lung cancer in 2005, he gave up his practice and devoted a year to taking care of her. She died July 12, 2006.

He married Rebecca McIntosh on March 1, 2008, in Gresham.

During his lifetime in church service, he served as Bishop, counselor in the Stake Presidency and as a Mission President in the Florida, Jacksonville mission from 1998 to 2001.

A three-sport varsity athlete in high school, he was physically active all his life, jogging and participating in several Hood to Coast relays. He was both a snow and water skier, liked golf and snorkeling and became scuba certified in 2006. He relished time and vacations spent with children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife; mother, Lola Browning of Idaho Falls; brother, Mac Browning of Boise, Idaho; sister, Clara Taylor of Idaho Falls; children, Richard Hansen of Gresham, Stacy Brown of Sandy, Scott Hansen of Gresham, Ralph Hansen of Annandale, Va., Paul Hansen of Sandy and David Hansen of Spanish Fork, Utah; stepchildren, Denise Dumas of South Ogden, Utah, Tiffany Reynolds of Saudi Arabia, Jennifer Fletcher of Rexburg, Idaho; and 38 grandchildren and 10-great-grandchildren.

Gresham Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
