I left the mission home Wednesday, March 19, 2008 for his first assignment to work in the QUIMPER Area with Elder Stephen Jake Freeman, who will be my trainer and 1st companion. Elder Stephen Jake Freeman is from Cedar Hills. His father is a fire fighter. June 11, 2008 Elder Freeman was transferred and I met my second companion for QUIMPER Area, Elder Matthijs Hendrik Smith of Arizona. He has one brother and two sisters. Both parents served missions, his mom in Chile and his father in Japan. He speaks very good French. July 9, 2008 I met our new mission president this last week. President Staheli was the personal secretary to President Hinckley. He is a really nice guy. His wife was in the tabernacle choir for the last 8 years. Earlier in his life President Staheli found a shorthand book for 10 cents at the library and decided to pick it up-It was being sold because of lack of use. He decided to learn it and then put it to the side. Years later he received a call from Salt Lake looking for people with certain qualifications including knowing how to write shorthand. He was interviewed and then became a secretary to the first presidency and then personal secretary to President Hinckley when he became president, making about 14 and 1/2 years total working in the office of the first presidency.
