Stories: Opening the Caen sisters

Opening the Caen sisters 29 Nov 2008
In February 2007, President Pond decided to open Caen to sisters for the first time in many a year. I was lucky enough to have the privilege of opening this area along with my fabulous Irish companion, Soeur Garrett. Well, we couldn't go straight there when we were called there because our apartment wasn't ready yet. The Elders were still looking for an apartment, so we hung out with the Versailles sisters while we were waiting. Two and a half weeks later, we moved into our brand new apartment in downtown Caen. We moved in on a Saturday. So, we took the train from Paris in the afternoon, and we arrived in Caen around 6pm. On the train, Soeur Garrett and I both realized that not only did we not have any food on the train, but that we wouldn't have any food in our new apartment. Also, we didn't know where to go to get food that would be open late on a Saturday night, and the next day was Sunday, and we couldn't go shopping then. Well, we figured, either we would fast for a couple of days, or we would beg to be invited over to a member's house for dinner on Sunday, or we would ask the elders if we could borrow some food from them. We finally arrived in Caen, and the bureau elders were there with their van to set up our furniture for us, so they picked us up from the gare. They made one stop on the way to our apartment, and Frère Pierre handed us a shopping bag and said it was from his wife for the sisters. Inside, we found fruit, yogurt, pasta, steak haché, and a meal that she had prepared for us. Never had such kindness been bestowed on anyone more grateful. We felt the kindness of the Pierre family for following the spirit and giving two poor sister missionaries enough food to last them until they could buy their own. We were so blessed in Caen, and this was just the beginning.
