Spandau Ward House Damaged by Arson

(May 22, 2001) The damaged Spandau ward house will be torn down soon as the costs of fixing it would be higher than building a new one. It is said that the new building will be finished in the Fall of 2002. The members are hopeful that this will be the case.

(Jan. 26, 2001) The Spandau Ward House was extensively damaged in a fire set early Sunday morning. According to Michaela Müller, the bishop's office is completely burned out with damage to the Cultural Hall as well. Without fire insurance, the church will be responsible to cover all repairs through tithing. During reconstruction, the ward will be meeting in the Dahlem Chapel from 2-5 PM on Sundays. However, the ward is currently searching for a temporary location within the ward boundaries to meet in. The Spandau bishopric has now announced that the Ward will not be able to meet in the damaged building for 15-18 months, as the building will not only be repaired but remodeled as well.

According to an article in the local newspaper, the 20-year old male suspect was captured a day after the ward house fire while attempting to break into a Red Cross kindergarten on Ackerstrasse. The police also suspect him for a robbery and fire on Neuendorfer Strasse. The suspect has admitted to breaking into the chapel, but states that he is not responsible for the fire. KIRCHEN-BRANDSTIFTER FESTGENOMMEN Junger Spandauer bestreitet die Tat Spandau SPANDAU - Gegen einen 20-jaehrigen Spandauer hat ein Richter Haftbefehl erlassen. Der Beschuldigte soll vorige Woche an der Huegelschanze das Gemeindebuero einer protestantischen Kirche in Brand gesteckt haben, nachdem er in die Kirchenraeume eingebrochen war. Es enstand ein Sachschaden von fast einer haben Million Mark. Die Polizei war dem Mann durch Zufall auf die Schliche gekommen. Eine Zivilstreife erwischte ihn zusammen mit zwei Komplizen einen Tag nach dem Brand auf frischer Tat bei einem Einbruch in einen Kindergarten des Roten Kreuzes in der Ackerstrasse. Bei den Vernehmungen ergab sich der dringende Tatverdacht, dass der 20-jaehrige fuer zwei Brandstiftungen in Spandau verantwortlich ist. Ausser dem Brand in den Kirchenraeumen legt ihm die Polizei auch die Brandstiftung in der Neuendorfer Strasse zur Last. Auch dort soll der 20-jaehrige zuvor eingebrochen sein und ein Handy sowie Geld gestohlen haben. Der junge Mann, der polizeilich bereits wegen Einbruch und Brandstiftung bekannt ist, gab die Einbrueche zu, bestritt aber, die Braende gelegt zu haben.
