Recent trip to Athens 11 Nov 2003
We did it! We ran the Athens Marathon - the original course (you know, the one where the guy dies at the end)! Unfortunately it was on Sunday morning (Nov 2) so we missed church, but we did visit with the Halandri Branch President, Pres. Petersen. It sounds like the missionaries are having lots of success with international folks, especially those who don't have the church in their homeland. Not very many Greek baptisms, sadly. Perhaps the time has not yet come for our beloved Greek people, not that we'll quit trying (and praying). The new metro lines were marvelous, and I was quite impressed by the new stations at Syndagma and Ommonia, and the new airport, out east of the city, is quite modern! Lots of scaffolding, lots of construction, but I have every confidence the city will shine for the Olympics. The weather was perfect (I don't think I'll ever try Athens in August again) and the people were very friendly and so willing to let me speak amateur Greek. After being home for almost ten years, I was a little apprehensive about going back, but it was absolutely worth it! So many happy memories and familiar places! I've fallen in love with Greece all over again! Keep the missionaries and members and investigators in your prayers.
