Currently married with 3 children, I served my mission in 1983 when we were only allowed an 18 month mission. I spent the majority of my mission opening or re-opening areas, particularly in Todos Santos, San Pedro Necta, and Ixtahuacan. One of my last efforts was spent acquiring land upon which to build a chapel in Ixtahuacan. I "learned" and spoke Mam, and I am currently serving with Wayne Gelder, John Bartholemew, Dale Hagemeyer, Kent Fugal, and Hans Redd in the church translation department. Our group recently returned to Guatemala to see how things have changed over the last 20 years and to see how well they were understanding our attempts at translating for General Conference and other events in Mam. WOW - how the church has grown in our areas, particularly in Colotenango and Ical. Not only is there a beautiful, two story chapel in Ixtahuacan, but there is even a chapel high upon the hillside in Ical. Unfortunately, the Mam program is inactive but Elders are still assigned to the areas. Two Elders cover Ixtahuacan, Colotenango, Ical, and San Pedro Necta by commuting. I would love to hear any updates on these areas.
