A strengthening U.S.-Indonesia relationship reflects a push toward global peace, said the Indonesian ambassador to the U.S. in a lecture on Thursday, (Oct. 12, 2006) at the Kennedy Center.

"We are entering into a community of democracy where we can pursue the objective of establishing peace in the world by adhering to the concept of democratic peace," said his Excellency Sudjadnan Parnohadiningrat, Indonesian ambassador to the U.S.

His lecture, "U.S. - Indonesia Relationship: Building A Strategic Partnership Between Two Large Democracies," addressed how Indonesia and the U.S. share common interest in fighting against terrorism, promoting democracy, maintaining peace and fostering economic growth.

The Indonesian island of Bali and capital city of Jakarta suffered bomb attacks in recent years as a result of terrorism.

"We are part of the global effort to fight terrorism because we are victims of terrorism," Parnohadiningrat said. "The number of victims [in Indonesia] is as big as the American citizens killed...in September 11, 2001."

Maintaining peace and stability in the Asia Pacific region requires support from the U.S., Parnohadiningrat said.

"Indonesia has the opportunity at working...to get into the global outreach of the American foreign policy in hopes that we might get a better opportunity to develop the regions," he said.

In 2008, Indonesia will be a guest supplier of oil to the U.S., an important step in promoting U.S.-Indonesian economic relations, he said.

Parnohadiningrat became ambassador of Indonesia to the U.S. in January 2006. He was a guest lecturer for the Ambassadorial Insights Lecture series sponsored by the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies.
