16 Nov 1998 - Jakarta

Following the ending of special session of People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), it was reported that 8 students were killed during clash between security troops and students on Friday, Nov 13. Then this tragedy followed by people's protests where they looked for army and police personnel and punished them. On Saturday afternoon, Nov 14, another riots occurred again, where the rioters burnt some automobile and motorcycle showrooms in the Central Jakarta, smashing window glasses, and looting the stores in several places in greater Jakarta. Jakarta was empty during weekend. The unrest was a bit softer because of the Marine troops took over the security system. As reported, the students will keep protesting the MPR's session results and keep demanding no dual function of the armed forces (ABRI), probing former president Suharto's wealth, and now they demanding the resignation of ABRI chief, general Wiranto, as he failed to protect the students and people. All of our Church units in Jakarta and Bekasi did not hold the Sunday meetings as approved by appropriate higher priesthood leaders. So far no damages on our Church meetinghouses in Jakarta and Bekasi.

We still do not know what is going to happen today, tomorrow and so on, since the government leaders and opposition leaders still do not hold reconciliation meeting. The economy again will be hit because of above situation. I believe that the rupiah value will fall down again against US dollar.

Be informed accordingly please.
