Stories: In Memory of The Mamma

This isn't really a funny story, but I just wanted to post something here about a woman who enriched many missionaries lives while in Ferrara. To us missionaries, she was known simply as "Mamma".
If you ever served in Ferrara before 2000 you would know her as she was our next door neighbor. I remember coming home from long tracting days and smelling the sweet smell of Italian home cooking almost everyday. The Mamma would have something new each day, cooking from scratch to feed us and spend some conversation with us. To her, we were almost literally her children and she wanted to take care of us.
Another thing I remember well was the nicknames she'd give all of us. I was known as Pippin, while my companions, Anziano Squire and Huntsman (Yes we were in a trio) were known as Squallo Bianco and Spirolino respectively heh. We'd be home some days and hear The Mamma calling us from next door. "Squallo!! Pippin!" And we'd always rush right over to get some freshly made pasta or prosciutto and grissini! Yum!
I was very fortunate to be able to stop by Ferrara once again on my trip to Padova to go home. I got to see the Mamma one last time. She was crying when we met and talked about the fun we had had two years before with "Squallo" and "Spirolono" She suffered from diabetes and due to that, had blood clots in her legs and pain that made it hard for her to walk. I went home, and shortly after, got an email that she had passed away. Although I miss her and her bright spirit, I know that our "Eternal Investigator" Mamma is still recieving the message of the Gospel and may have already, finally accepted it. I also know that she is recieving all the blessings due to her from her kindness to missionaries over these years. |

LDS QUOTE: |
"You are a great army of returned missionaries. Go forward with new zeal and determination, and through your example shine the light of the gospel in this troubled world. This is the Lord’s work in which we are engaged. God lives. Jesus is the Christ. We belong to His Church. This is my witness to you in the name of Jesus Christ, amen."
