For 24 years I yearned to return to Japan and finally got my chance a couple of months ago. I secured a grant to go over and start to set up a short-term study abroad program for Central Michigan University students. Although I teach physiology I was just hired to teach first year Japanese starting in the fall (2002). That will help me keep up with the "go." Anyway, the majority of my stay was in Kyoto, but part of my trip was back to Hokkaido to visit a couple of Ainu Culture museums. It was glorious. I was able to visit 4 of my former areas (Otaru, Moiwa, Chitose and Hiragishi) and I dropped into the Honbu too. I was asked to speak in Sacrament meeting in Otaru. It was one of the best experiences of my life. I faced a congregation of about 80 members, perhaps 25 there were from the good old days. Remarkably, some of the members remembered me and in fact several I baptized were in attendence. |
