St. Bernard 27 Jun 2009
Dogs weren't usually a big problem in Japan, but one night that changed for my companion and I while tracting. Down the block, we noticed a huge St. Bernard taking its owner for a run/drag. I was pretty funny - the little Japanese man being pull through the snow by this full-sized dog who was loving it. About an hour later, we found the home of the dog. It was my turn to knock... Bernie (as we came to call him) was tied up down at the end of a long driveway and didn't seem to be happy we were there. My companion stepped back and let me do the honors. Bernie starts barking and running toward me. But no problem - I could see his leash, which wasn't very long, and I knew he would hit the end of it anytime now. Only he didn't... Bernie just kept on loping toward me. It was then that I noticed his leash was connected to a cable that ran the length of the driveway, allowing Bernie to run the all the way to me, and then *$#-! bam - he was on me. He must have weighed 200 pounds. I went down, as my companion looked on (now across the street). My only thought was "didn't I hear somewhere that if you die serving the Lord, you go straight to heaven...?". (Actually, I had one other thought - a word, actually - "Kujo" - Stephen King movie - ya - you'll have to see it to know what I mean.) The next thing I felt was something warm and wet on my face. It turned out Bernie was so happy to have a playmate come visit, he just had to welcome me with a big sloppy, sloppery lick. Not an ounce of meanness in him. My companion was now cracking up from across the street (still keeping his distance). I don't think we ever bothered knocking on the door again. But we waved at Bernie as we went by over the next several days. I'm sure he's somewhere in doggy heaven now.
