Houses and apts 08 Oct 2003
My dendo days were equally divided with 5 houses and 5 apts in 8 places. Otaru had the 4 man house behind the church, Iwamizawa was a house and we moved to an apartment. I opened Shinkotoni with Miller and McAllister as a 3 some in an apt. In Shibetsu, we lived in a 2nd story apato over a store with an extra room that served as the Church, Fukuzumi had an apt, Asahigawa started out in a home that had the reeekingest beni I ever smelled in Nihon (even worse than Abashiri which reeked even in the winter.) In Kitami, we recorded a 41 below 0 temp once. We lived in a house that served as a church also. It was so cold, we had to leave the water running, and we slept in the kitchen with heat on - the first time I had ever done that on my mission. We used the public ofuro exclusively there! I finished in Tomakomai with an apartment. I remember the searches we would make for a good apt. We would search for days for the middle second floor apt of a nine apt unit. OR - look for someone who had a newborn infant and try to rent the apt above them. Ah!! heat on all the time and it rose right up to keep us warm. M Neal Bowes 7/1976 to 7/1978
