Cleaning up bad posters, part 3 26 Apr 2004
Pat, I remembered you telling me that story when we were dodes, and it inspired me to try it about a year later... I was in boony Nemuro and I believe Robert Schofield was my dode. There was a particularly offensive poster we had to pass almost every day. We were working with an investigator who was really progressing spiritually, and it bothered us to pass this poster on the way to our lessons. Remembering the experience Pat related here, I took upon myself to do the same thing. We headed out on night (after 9 p.m; never a good omen) armed with broad-tipped magic markers. I immediately started drawing modest clothes on the figure. I was almost done when Schofield hit and said "Finch! Stop! We need to get out of here, now!" I looked across the street, and in a fairly large kissaten window, at least a dozen Nihonjins, another one literally wouldn't've had room to squeeze in, all staring at us with looks of complete confoundment. We immediately ran away, but in a town as small as Nemuro, the two gaijins really couldn't hide; it was very embarrassing! Thanks a lot for the idea, Pat.
