Some news from Atsubetsu 27 Apr 2004
A short report on Atsubetsu. I was thrilled to see Ueno kyodai back to activity for the last year or so since he I had not seen him active for these many years since I had baptized him in Iwamizawa 16 years ago. How sweet it was to see him again, and active in the church.

Atsubetsu ward itself is hanging in there. I was there for fast and testimony meeting and the testimonies borne were, how can I put this delicately... suboptimal to nurturing the testimonies of others in the meeting. We were slammed with young woman after young woman who testified about how glad they were about going to s camp and making friends. I only heard the name of Jesus mentioned twice in the meeting and Joseph Smith, Pres. Hinckley and the book of Mormon were not mentioned. I felt that the members need direction on how to bear uplifting testimonies. We had such a directive come from our Stake Pres. in Milwaukee, WI, very particular in the sorts of things we ought to mention in our testimonies, and after my initial rebellion against being told I can only say things the way someone else wants me to say them, I realized that our meetings were a lot more spiritual and that real testimonies were borne more frequently. Perhaps the Stake presidencies in Hokkaido could do something similar?

The old Bishop of Atsubetsu, Tsujimoto kyodai , his wife just gave birth to their 6th daughter against zero sons.

I was pleased with the teacher of the elders quorum, brother Goto, and the Gospel Doctrine class except for the fact that the teacher taught lesson 14 I believe it was, saying that the Book of Lehi still is included in the Book of Mormon we have now and noone protested. I looked at the text later since my mother-in-law Sister Takai, is the instructor for the Young Single s Gospel Doctrine Class and indeed, there was a chart in there, showing the Book of Lehi to be present in the current Book of Mormon, and the books of Mosiah, Alma, Helaman, 3 and 4 Nephi being lost in the 116 stolen manuscript pages. Truly, our brothers and sisters need better materials to teach from and to study from in Japan. Does anyone know which works are fully translated into Japanese? I really wish they could have the benefit of some of the great commentaries on the scriptures or uplifting books we have. Of course there is no replacement for the scriptures, but there again, they lack the JST, or a Strong's Concordance etc.
