"Alone with the Hairy Ainu" 15 Feb 2005
Dear Senkyoshitachi: The title to this message was to grab your attention. It is actually the title of an interesting book written in the 1800's by a Western explorer to Hokkaido. I want to survey you on Ainu stories you had during dendo. We Sapporo Dendobu missionaries represent the greatest foreign interaction with the Ainu in modern history. Our experience is important. I teach a class on the Ainu once every two years in Japan for my university. My questions to you: 1. Did you teach any Ainu? 2. Did you baptize Ainu, and are there any active today? 3. Were the Ainu proud of their heritage and show ethic pride? 4. Any other interesting anecdotes? Note: Many people we taught probably had Ainu geneaology, but we couldn't discern their Ainu physical characteristics due to very few, if any. pure Ainu remaining. That and since Ainu were discriminated against, many didn't acknowledge their ancestry. Now, the Ainu have been officially recognized by the government as an indigenous people whose culture and language are worthy of protection.
