Stories: Drunk at Sacrament Meeting

I was working the Higashi Muroran area (I think Rick Richards was my companion. Anywone know how to get in touch with him?) in the Winter of 1978. We met for church at the branch located in Muroran (about a 25 minute train ride). The elders working in Muroran would often do a little dendo at the nearby shopping center before church started. On this particular Sunday, they invited a man and his son (about 6 years old) to attend church. He and his son arrived and were seated near the back of the little chapel, equiped with metal folding chairs (no pews). The man was acting a little strangely, and we soon came to the conclusion that he was quite intoxicated. About a half hour into the meeting, during the Relief Society President's talk, the man bagan to slump in his metal folding chair, and soon passed out. In the meantime, his unsupervised son is making a terrible racket. Eventually, the intoxicated man abruptly fell out of his chair, and, while lying on the floor commenced to empty his bladder. It became immediately evident just how much he had to drink. So, a few of the brethren hauled him out of the room, a nice sister cleaned up the huge puddle, and in the meantime, the son was conducting flight tests in the back of the chapel with a paper airplane he constucted from the Sacrament Meeting program. In all of this, the Relief Society President didn't skip a beat in her talk. |
