I am currently attending Ohio State getting my Ph.D. in Computational Linguistics. I have at least 4 years left, so I'll be here for a while. I got married to Casey Carter in June of 2002, and we had a son (Ivan Daniel Hovermale III - Daniel for short) in April of 2004. That's whose picture you're looking at.

Although a comon misconception is that a linguist is someone who speaks a bunch of languages, many linguists only speak their native language. Linguistics is the study of language in general, and trying to figure out why we do things the way that we do. Computational linguistics has to do with computer programs that deal with language (spelling and grammar checkers, speech recognition and synthesis, computer translation programs, etc.). I am interested in Machine (Computer) Translation programs, and computer programs that teach people other languages. I am working on several research projects, and despite my disclaimer in the first sentence of this paragraph I do want to speak a lot of languages. I am excited to be starting Arabic this summer - wish me luck!

Apart from being a grad student I have a consulting company and a translation business. I am currently a ward missionary, and I'm sure the Elders are sick of hearing "On my mission...." from me every 5 minutes. I have so many fond memories of my mission and many of them are because of the friendships that I had with you all. I've been a real slacker about keeping in touch with everyone, so please email me and I promise to email you back. Feel free to call me as well (although I must warn you - I do have an obvious American accent when I speak Russian now). And if you're ever in the Columbus area let me know. I miss everyone from my mission so much and would be glad to get together or have you stay with my family.

Remember - Character is what you do when noone else is looking.

Do vstrechi i slava sionu!

-DJ

LDS QUOTE:
"You are a great army of returned missionaries. Go forward with new zeal and determination, and through your example shine the light of the gospel in this troubled world. This is the Lord’s work in which we are engaged. God lives. Jesus is the Christ. We belong to His Church. This is my witness to you in the name of Jesus Christ, amen."
- Elder L. Tom Perry
Ensign, Nov. 2001
