Jack Lemmon was selected by the Sons of Utah Pioneers, (S.U.P.) as someone
who epitomized a modern pioneer. The town of Hurricane was only 19 years
old when he was born in 1925. He and the City have grown up together.
During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps, Pacific Theater, as a
grader operator. His skill and his leadership abilities earned him the
rank of Technical Sergeant at age 18. In the year 1946 he married Delma
Ballard. She died of cancer in 1992 and a few years later he married
Angelyn Stout Almond Lemmon. As a successful businessman, he built the
first swimming pool in Hurricane, had the first auto parts store there,
owned the Phillips 66 fuel distributorship and co-founded B&L Philgas with
his brother-in-law, Darwin Ballard. An exemplar of devotion to family, God
and community, he has served on the city fire department, city planning
commission, county planning commission, city council, hospital board,
Washington County School Board Foundation, Washington County Water
Conservancy District, and mayor of Hurricane for 2 terms. Church callings
include: teacher, stake young men presidency, missionary, bishop’s
counselor, bishop for ten years, stake president’s counselor, stake
president for seven years. He served as a mission president in Louisiana,
Baton Rouge Mission for three years and a counselor in the St. George
Temple Presidency for five years. He was also a temple ordinance worker and
sealer for many years as well as a missionary in the New York, Palmyra
Mission for 18 months. Hurricane and the surrounding region is a better
place because of the pioneering accomplishments of Jack Lemmon.
