HERLINO & ROSA MAKAYA 26 Nov 2003
I first met Herlino in March 1977. He was working at the Communications Station in Ponape. He was full of energy and love of life. He loved everything. Elder George Mortensen and I taught him a few discussions and we were transferred to Mand, Madolenihm in June and lost contact for a while.

When I was assigned to Kolonia in September, we saw him and renewed the teaching. He was baptized on 24 September 1977. After dealing with some challenges with Rosa’s family accepting the Church Herlino’s wife was baptized on 19 November 1977. She showed us all how she was Herlino’s anchor in the gospel and in life. They lived in Sokehs Pah, the Mortlokese side near Rosa’s family.

Herlino was Ponapean and Rosa was Mortlokese. They really got together in Hawaii when Rosa was there for heart surgery and Herlino had graduated from McKinley High School. Herlino said that visiting her in the hospital was when he knew he was in love and they would be married. They both went back to Ponape and were married, had a family of their own and several adopted children and led them in many adventures.

Herlino was a Branch President in Madolenihm and a District President for Pohnpei. He translated what we have of the Book of Mormon in Pohnpeian. He also translated the Temple Ordinances into Pohnpeian by assignment in the SLC Temple.

He left Pohnpei and his job as Chief Postal Inspector for the Federated States of Micronesia in 1998 when he took his family to Honolulu for medical care for Rosa. She suffered several strokes and passed on in 2001. Herlino joined her on 21 November 2003. Prior to passing unexpectedly, he was able to travel to the Big Island of Hawaii and the US Mainland to visit family and friends. We are all grateful for the farewell visits. Many will miss him.

In several visits since moving to Hawaii, he reminded me of a favorite story I told in 1977 about crawling to the finish line. Many have heard this story about a boy who was not a fast runner but very excited to have his dad watch him run a race near the end of a school year. He told his dad he would not win the race and would likely come in last place, but he wanted his dad to watch him run. When the race day came, the father was there. The teacher started the race and they were off. As the boy looked up to see his dad, he tripped and fell. Everyone else had finished the race, but the boy did not give up. He kept crawling until he reached the finish line. His teacher picked him up, told him, “Well done, you have finished the race.” The teacher then gave the boy his reward.

Herlino loved his Heavenly Father. He fell several times in life. He kept crawling and he did finish his race well. His Master Teacher has embraced him and thanked him for all that he did that was so very good. I love Herlino and Rosa and will miss them until I finish my race.
