Wayne Millburn McGrath, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed
away on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005 at the Banner Baywood Medical Center in
Mesa. He was 68 years old. Wayne was born November 25, 1936 in Duncan, AZ to Vernon and Vessa Hanchett McGrath. He attended Eastern Arizona College (EAC) where he played basketball and earned his degree. He married Barbara Shumway on Aug 25, 1956 in the Mesa Arizona Temple. He attended NAU, where he was a member of the Lumberjack basketball team.

After graduating he returned to his home town of Duncan to teach and
coach in both the elementary and high schools. In 1960 he accepted a
position at EAC in Thatcher, AZ, and spent the next 7 years touching
many lives through his teaching and coaching. He held several positions
of leadership after his coaching career was finished. In 1977 he became
the President of EAC where he served the community for the next 7 years.
In 1984, Wayne and Barbara and their family left their beloved home in
Thatcher to move to Mesa where Wayne accepted a position as the State
Director of Community Colleges. For the next 8 years he worked to
improve the image of community colleges and became a great champion of the Community College system. He retired in 1992 and accepted the call
to serve as the Mission President of the St. Louis Missouri Mission for
the LDS church. He and Barbara had the choice experience of guiding 580
young men and women in their missionary service from 1992-1995. After
returning home, he served as the Bishop of the Maricopa 54th Young Adult
Ward. Wayne is survived by his wife of 49 years, Barbara; sons, Darren
(Ginger) of St. David, Phillip (Susie) of Arkansas, M'Kay (Angi) of
Utah, and Kresten (Mary Jane) of Chandler; and daughters Lindyl McDonald
(Aaron) of Gilbert and Kelly Hatch (Cody) of Yuma and 25 grandchildren.
He was a great man who will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
