FEARLESSING

Hna Callister/Hansen - Flushing 1 Sp - Aug 22, 1995 - "LIMITED TO 20 MINUTES ONLY - The other day, we were looking up an address in a part of the area where we don't have anyone. The address was bad, so we decided to "fearless" for 20 minutes. I knew that if we didn't find anybody there, we probably wouldn't go back there for a long time. I said a small prayer while on my bike, and I told Heavenly Father that if there were any Spanish people in the area, we needed to find them within the next 20 minutes. It wasn't 3 minutes before we spotted a small group, and went to talk to them. We've already taught a charla to 5 of them, and it was awesome, the spirit was so strong! About 10 minutes later we ran into 3 women who are very interested in the church. One of them has a daughter who went to the Plainview Stake Girl's Camp. Within 20 minutes our prayer had been answered, and it really helped me see that when we tell the Lord exactly what we need, and then we have the faith to expect that it's going to happen, He truly will bless us with an answer."

Elder Supinger/Erickson - Rego Park 111 Sp - Aug 21, 1995 - "FALSE ADDRESS YIELDS GIRL WITH SAME NAME - We needed the Zone "juiced up" again, so we reintroduced the 10 "fearlesses" per day, or 70 per week. We fearlessed this lady the other day, and she seemed cool, so we called her up and made an appointment. We met 2 sisters, 21 and 12 waiting. So we asked is Vanessa home and the one girl says "I'm Vanessa, I've been waiting for you guys. But we had never seen the girls before! The lady we fearlessed lied to us, but the address she gave led us to 2 golden girls, whose names were exactly the same. They're getting baptized this Sunday! They're so excited about attending Regional Conference in Westchester. The Lord rights the wrongs of others."

Elder Hymas/Mastrocola - Brooklyn Deaf - May 30, 1995 - "ON BICYCLES - We see miracles every day. One cool small one, was riding our bikes to church at Park Slope on Sunday, and meeting a man also riding a bicycle too. We began talking, and as we rode for about 30 minutes, we taught him everything. He was interested and really wants the Elders to come over. One of many daily miracles."

Elder Erickson/Hansen - LIC 11 Sp - Jun 4, 1995 - "ATTRACTIVE GIRL WANTED TO MARRY LDS BOYFRIEND IN TEMPLE - Usually we don't fearless younger girls (under the age of 20, as we don't want them to get the wrong impression), but as we were walking, the spirit spoke so clearly. It said "Her!" Elder Hansen and I both began talking to her, she was carrying some books to the Library, so I took them from her and we all walked together. She told us how her boyfriend was a member and that they had talked about religion. She said she wanted to be a member, so they could be sealed together in the Temple. Our jaws were on the ground by this time. We made an appointment for 2 days later. We taught her the first two discussions and she committed herself for Jun 11, before I could invite her. She was very prepared to say the least. She then asked us before we left if there was a Temple in Hawaii and we said "Yes, Why?" "Because this is the one we want to get married in." The Lord has prepared people to look beyond baptism and to prepare them for the Temple. I am so glad we had the spirit with us to help us in our fearlessing. The Lord certainly knows who he wants in His church. All we have to do is listen, and act."

Elder Rogers/Hoggan - Midwood 1 Eng - May 14, 1995 - "LORD GAVE ME SECOND CHANCE TO FEARLESS - On the way from transfers, Elder Sonne and I were waiting for the subway. I saw a 50 year old white man and the moment I saw him, I knew I needed to fearless him. I was nervous though, because he was "white". I casually asked if he knew the time, but then I just said "Thankyou", and left it at that, because of the "fear of man". (I have a mindset, that Brooklyn white people are the same as Long Island white people.) Our train arrived and Elder Sonne and I sat down. A few seconds later, the man sat down right next to me. The Lord was giving me one last chance. The spirit said "Fearless him!" So I did. He is the best man. We BRT'd the whole train ride, and he is interested. His name is Frank Manno. He lives in Bergen Beach, Brooklyn, the nicest part of our area. So when you interview him to be the next Midwood Branch President, write and let me know."

Elder Reynolds/Park - Brentwood Sp - May 7, 1995 - "RAN ACROSS PARKING LOT - We were walking down Main St, trying to fearless, but couldn't find any Spanish people. Suddenly I saw in the distance a darker skin color. She was on the far side of the parking lot, and about to get in her car. I felt the need to fearless her, but how? She was about 100 yards away and getting into her car. There was only one way. It took me back to those days in Gym class, when we had to run the 100 yard dash. I took off! About half way there, I said rather loudly "excuse me!" I think it would have scared most people and driven them away, but she waited for me with a big smile. We obtained her name, address and made an appointment. When we called, it was a great first, she told us how she didn't ever allow religious people into her house before. However, she thought that if it was that important that I would run, really run hard, just to talk to one person, that it must be important enough to listen. She's great. Her daughter came to a Youth Activity the next day and they both came to church on Sunday. I love this work."

Elder Alexander/Crouch - Uniondale 1 - Mar 15, 1995 - "FROM A CAR - I have learned a great deal about this month's topic of "Recognizing and Following the Spirit". One experience this week, was as we were driving through Franklin Square to our next appointment, inspired by Elder Udell, Elder Crouch and I search for souls as we drive as well. I noticed this young lady intently reading a book as she was walking down the street. The spirit told me to stop, get out of the car, and ask her if she liked reading, and thus offer her a BofM. I drove past, stopped at a stop light. She was still behind us and I couldn't resist the prompting. We made a U Turn, parked the car on the side of the road and began to walk swiftly after her. She was surprised to see us. She had not been a church goer, but recently began studying religion, because of some new found desire. The book she was reading was of a religious nature. She took the copy of the BofM. I felt a great uplift afterwards. I am grateful for the guidance of the spirit and to be a tool in the hands of the Lord."

Elder Head/Harris - DL - Staten Island 1 - Oct 10, 1994 - "GAVE US SECOND CHANCE IN ELEVATOR - NOW WHOLE FAMILY IN LIBERIA ARE LISTENING - This experience begins with us riding in an elevator to see an investigator, in which 2 young African ladies were in but we did not fearless. As we got out both of us knew that we should have fearlessed them. No-one was home so we got back in the elevator, which now had the same two ladies in. This time we opened our mouths. We taught and eventually baptized one of them, Fannie Seibure, two months ago. She has the strongest testimony of all the investigators I have worked with. The story doesn't end there. Her family in Liberia and her brothers and sisters in America here, harassed her for her decision to be baptized, even threatening to cut off all their financial support., if she didn't stop attending. Throughout this great trial of faith, Fannie remained strong.

With the help of the Liberian District President who happened to spend two weeks in our Branch, Fannie put her trust in the Lord, as we all prayed for a "softening" of the hearts of her family. She sent a tape home in which she bore her testimony that this was the true church. She said that nothing could ruin her faith. "I'm putting God first!" After the family received the tape, the family called and apologized for their threats, and explained that they would attend church there in Liberia. They now want to become members. Currently we are teaching her brother, William, who is very interested and feels the spirit as we teach. Fannie sits in on the discussions and bears her testimony. From that 1 fearless, the Lord creates miracles."

Elder Martinez/Erickson - DL - Bushwick 11 Sp - Sep 18, 1994 - "GOING THE SECOND MILE - A FAMILY - A whole family was baptized this week. The greatest joy to me is to bring people unto Christ but more especially families. Celsa is a great person, who we found on a "fearless", on our way back home. Even though we finished our 10 fearlesses, we still fearlessed her and taught her."

Elder Malan/Olsen - Bushwick 11 Sp - Sep 11, 1994 - "10 - GOING THE EXTRA MILE - Elder Reynolds and I were on a split and we were going to meet back at the apartment at 4 pm. We were having some success with fearlessing and at 3.55 we had 9 fearlesses in. At 4 pm in the apartment, Elder Reynolds suggested that we should go out for at least one last one. We walked down the street and eventually came across a lady who was pushing her baby. We stopped and talked to her, she asked if we were Mormons, as she said that she had a boss who was a Mormon, who once talked with her about the church which brought tears to her eyes. We are now teaching her. A member "opened his mouth" and we went the extra mile for the Lord to pour out His blessings."

Elder Erickson/Martinez - DL - Bushwick 11 Sp - Sep 4, 1994 - "10 - GOING THE EXTRA MILE - I have only been in New York for a few days, but already I have felt the incredible enthusiasm and energy that has caught hold of everyone here in the mission. Everyone is checking up on each other every night to see if they have completed their 10 "Fearlesses". President, we have had such great success with fearlessing that we are having difficulty keeping up with all out appointments. The Lord is truly preparing the way, the people are very humble and they have a desire to follow the Savior.

On Tuesday night, we were coming home from a teaching appointment and needed to complete our 10 fearlesses. As we turned the corner we saw a family of five walking towards us. We politely stopped them and introduced ourselves and told them about a special message we have for families. The Mexican mother explained that she was Catholic, to which we said our message is for everyone, she said she liked talking about God and so the next evening at 9.20 pm we stopped by. At the 4th principle of the 1st discussion, Elder Martinez asked her how she felt. They were then committed for baptism. We wondered what would have happened if we had not followed the counsel to reach 10 fearlesses every day."

Elder Cowley/Doherty - Dyker Heights 1 Sp - Aug 22, 1994 - "FROM THE STREET TO THE SECOND FLOOR - We were trying to get into a building where a couple of our investigators lived. A 24 year old Dominican girl stuck her head out of the window on the 2nd floor and I felt prompted to "fearless" her. She came down and led us upstairs. We went inside and sat down and began to teach her the 1st discussion. During the 2nd principle, she mentioned about the Mormons back in Santo Domingo and she told us that she wanted to be baptized there. The 1st discussion was very powerful. That night she stayed up until 2 am reading and praying about the B of M. We shared the 2nd and it was incredible. I felt like crying. You know President, I know that I was sent to this area to find somebody. Now I know that person is her. Yesterday she was baptized. She was taught by the spirit. It felt so good to teach her. She has so much faith and is so humble. She will be a strong member. Now we're really going to obtain referrals from her as she has many friends."

Elder Davidson/Slade - Plainview 111 - Aug 29, 1994 - "ROOKIE - WAVED FROM THE CAR - Elder Slade and I were driving through our new area and I waved to a family. They waved back and I felt prompted that we needed to go back. After our later appointment we went back and we were able to set up a 1st discussion which went well. The lady committed to read and pray. We had 3 people at church after only 4 days in a "Blind Area."

Elder Ward/Ben Davis - Jamaica 1 Sp - Aug 29, 1994 - "ROOKIE - 20 PER DAY - Elder Davis told me one night before going to bed that he wanted to set the goal of "fearlessing" 20 people the next day. I agreed and we prayed for help in achieving the goal. The next day, Elder Davis just tore them apart fearlessing. Pretty soon I got the spirit too, and then there was no stopping us. The Lord blessed us too, with people in our paths. One lady came up and stopped us. She was from Peru and had just moved here. She said her husband would like to hear the discussions. I know that if we set goals and ask the Lord's help in achieving them He is bound to help us if we show our faith."

Elder Alexander/Sydall - Midwood 1 - Aug 7, 1994 - "NO FEAR - FOUND DEAF - With fearlessing, I have attempted it, worked at it, struggled with it and had a difficult time doing it. As you said it is one of the most effective ways of finding. Our appointment juked us tonight. As we walked away I pondered what you said about the effectiveness of fearlessing. I needed to do it. I then said a prayer in my heart as I walked down the street for the courage and faith to help me overcome my fear. We turned the corner and I saw 2 deaf men signing each other. I thought "this is it!" But I walked on by them. I stopped at the intersection and could not continue. I dragged myself back over to them, put my hand in the air to say Hi, took off my name tag and showed it to them. The one man Curtis who we communicated on paper with, had met the missionaries before but with frequent trips to Philadelphia had not kept contact. His friend Robert said he would like to learn more about religion. We got their addresses and told them our deaf missionaries would contact them. We shook hands and they gave us the sign for "love". I walked away feeling elated, a feeling of strength, and inner peace came over my entire body. I Knew my Heavenly Father was pleased with me. There is no greater feeling. With the Lord's help I was able to triumph and overcome my fear. Later that night we gave the referrals to the Deaf missionaries."

Elder Hardy/Giles - Richmond Hill 1 - Aug 21, 1994 - "LADY FEARLESSED US - We were walking to an appointment "fearlessing" on the way. We had fearlessed 2 people with no success. Then as we walked on, suddenly a lady popped out of her parked car and asked us "What do you guys do?" I felt the spirit as we talked with her. I talked to her last night on the phone and I have faith that she will be baptized. Elder Giles and I realized how the Lord prepares people and how we are merely instruments. Fearlessing works!!! Lately I've learned 2 secrets to Missionary Work that have enriched my vitality for the work. They are 1. Work and 2. Be a missionary all the time. This means that there are no days off, no hours off, no minutes off. As I've tried to apply these 2 principles, I've seen great and marvelous things occur. "Fearlessing" is probably the biggest key to our success because we have shown to the Lord that we will fearless everyone, he has placed prepared and ready souls in our path. Contrary to other times when my fearlessing was on and off and the people we talked to didn't seem very prepared, consistency is the key. Being a missionary all the time. Fearlessing everyone, everywhere, everytime and with no fear!"

Elder Powell/Reeves - Richmond Hill 1 - Jul 29, 1994 - "DIGNITY HAS PEOPLE FEARLESS US - People walk right up to us and ask us where we are from and what we do, which has led to more teaching than we have been accustomed to. If we always dress and act in public as servants of the Lord, He will continue to place people across our paths that He has prepared. It has been the most productive way of finding that we have yet discovered."

Hermana Barlow/Porter - Richmond Hill 11 Sp - Aug 22, 1994 - "DIGNITY BRINGS INTEGRITY - Every day I am reminded of what an incredible responsibility we have to wear these badges. Everywhere we go, people ask us "Oh, you're Mormons. They are such good people those Mormons." We represent millions of people from our Church! I love to walk down the streets and hear people whisper "Those are Mormons, not JW's, you can tell!"

Sister Porter/Barlow - Rich Hill 11 Sp - Jul 29, 1994 - "ROOKIE - PREVIOUSLY TAUGHT - We were truly guided to find Enrique. We fearlessed him outside his house. He had begun the discussions before but had moved and never finished them. He already has a love for the Book of Mormon and knows there is something distinctive about the Mormons.

Elder Tyler Johnson/Campbell - Bushwick 1 - Jul 15, 1994 - "We fearlessed a really kind man last night who was just walking up to his apartment building. He let us in to teach him. It was late so we read a little from the Bible and set up an appointment for later. He told us that he felt the Holy Spirit guided us to him, and we then taught him how to identify the spirit."

Elder Majors/Travis Christensen - LIC Sp - Jul 15, 1994 - "LED TO ANOTHER - We fearlessed a lady outside her apartment building. She was not interested but that led us to Carlos. He had discussions with some FTM's a while ago but ran into some problems. He fearlessed us at that same building. We then went and taught him. He will be baptized July 31. This work is the best."
