Kindness of Elder Paul Buys 04 Jan 2008
I was in Japan from 1958 to 1961 under Paul Andrus and I believe it was December of 1960 was visiting Hokkaido as a Traveling Elder (my traveling companion, Elder Van Dyke, had served in Hokkaido and wanted to return there before going home soon, otherwise, why would we travel to Hokkaido in December). At any rate we spent a week in each of the branches and in I believe Otaru (maybe Muroran), we met this young gakusei who wanted to go on a mission in the worst way, but could not afford it. Before I left on my mission, a friend in our Bishopric had offered to pay for my mission, but my mom (Michi Mano - of Dai Ichi fame) wanted to do it. I wrote to him and asked if he would be willing to sponsor a Japanese missionary, and in spite of having a large family and not being a rich man, he wrote back and said "When do we start?, but if this guy's not a good missionary, I'm going to take it out of your hide". I contacted President Andrus and the rest is history... Paul Buys of West Bountiful sponsored Elder Kikuchi on his mission, Elder Kikuchi became best and lifelong friends of the Buys family, and my hide was secure. From Ken Mano Pleasanton, California

"Obedience is the price, faith is the power, love is the motive, the Spirit is the key, and Christ is the reason." The motto of the Japan Fukuoka Mission can be applied not only to missionary work, but to everyday life. -BYU President Bateman
