Michael Ray Edward Sanders' Cholera Miracle

Sanders 1965-68 - Komatsu Era
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let's see, in April or May of 1967 I came down with cholera -- now there was a real
experience; I thought I was going to die for two weeks. I never went to the doctor.
You'll get a kick out of this story. I hate shots. So in Nagoya there were posted all
these warning signs about a cholera epidemic and the need to get shots. My cholera
shot in America was good for 2 years; it had almost been 2 years that I had been out.
I figured my shot was still good and that I could make it until my transfer out
of that area.
Wrong!!
I lost so much weight that when my greenie Elder Wilson first saw me he thought I was
an old man, etc. I never did recover from that weight loss until after I came home at
around 135 lbs.
In my missionary set-apart blessing, Elder Alvin R. Dyer in pertinent part promised me that
I would be protected from the diseases of the land -- well, one could argue that I was not protected in that I caught cholera, but I would argue that since I did not die (I laid on my futon for two weeks -- unable to eat or drink much of anything; just hitting the benjo[Toilet]).
I should have gone to a doc immediately with hind-sight.
Anyway, in hindsight it is funny that I was so stupid, but the Lord did take care of me.
I was so skinny that Elder Wilson used to use me to do military presses each morning.
He had been on the BYU freshman football team before he came out. I loved that guy; still do.
"Obedience is the price, faith is the power, love is the motive, the Spirit is the key, and Christ is the reason." The motto of the Japan Fukuoka Mission can be applied not only to missionary work, but to everyday life. -BYU President Bateman
