Small Things - by L. Edward Brown 12 Jun 2003

L. Edward Brown, Northern Far East Mission

October 1957 to May 1960

Dear Korean Missionaries:

As I read your personal historical accounts of your Korea experience, I am deeply impressed with this scripture.

Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying

the foundation of a great work. And out of small things

proceedeth that which is great. (D&C 64:33)

Each of your special personal experiences when brought together add up to great things. How impressive. Recently, I read the following thought from Ralph Marston which makes the same point.

Small Things

"Great things happen when small things are done with purpose, care and persistence. Few people can make a big positive impact on the first attempt, yet anyone can have a small impact, and then another and another.

The small things matter, because they join together to become big things. Every moment is your opportunity to do the small things that can surely and steadily bring about big results.

Those who sit and wait for a big break rarely ever get one, and wonder why life has been so cruel and unfair. Those who do what they can, when they can, with what they have, will get precisely where they intend to go.

Today is your chance to do what you can. It may seem small, but focus and persistence will, over time, make it into something big. Meaningful, lasting value is something that is built, effort upon effort, day after day, moment by moment. Step forward at every opportunity, be willing to do the small things, and you'll be making the big things happen." (Ralph Marston)

Each one of you contributed your small portion to what has become a great miracle in the land of Korea, simple little acts of service, an impression followed, a convert made, disease overcome, working through fatigue, learning to love, and finding the Savior for the first time thousands of miles from your home and then introducing him to others. God bless each one of you for your sacrifice and dedication when it may have seemed so difficult, if not impossible, to accomplish the task.

I spoke with Sister Palmer and we agreed to extend the deadline for submission of personal experiences related to your service in Korea to Jan. 10, 2003. If you have not yet sent in you "small" contribution, please do so. Remember "out of small things".................

I apologize for one additional request that we should have thought of earlier and of which Doug Andrew reminded us. It will greatly facilitate the project, if you can send us an electronic copy of your submission. This can be done in two ways. You can send it to me via email or send a floppy disk to Sister Palmer. If you miss the deadline you can also send an e-mail to Wayne Summers, NFEM Webmaster, and he will contact us.

Several of you have already send me email copies of your articles. You need not send them again. I have copies from the following: Russell Johnston, Craig Sonksen, Bruce Hobbs, Dale Rasmussen, Alan Perriton, Ray Hawkins, Kim N. Taylor, Douglas Andrew, Bruce Grover, Clayton Christensen, Gene Till, Floyd Gowans, Bruce Grant, Newell Kimball, Michael Nicholes, Ronald Neilsen, John Packer, Park Sung Joo, Paul Jones, Zeph Quirl, Richard Rife, Vearl Taylor and David Ward.

Many more have been sent directly to Sister Palmer. However, if you did not send a floppy disk, if you have access to a computer to do so, please send me a copy or a disk to her.

Our love to all of you always,

L. Edward Brown

"Obedience is the price, faith is the power, love is the motive, the Spirit is the key, and Christ is the reason." The motto of the Japan Fukuoka Mission can be applied not only to missionary work, but to everyday life. -BYU President Bateman
