Presidents: Lowell R. Tingey (1989 - 1992) | | Served: 1990 - 1992 | Areas Served: Southside, "Zelie", Kittanning, Carnegie, Bethel Bark | Companions: Braden Gregory Bell | Ryan Stephen Henrie | Mark E Kessler | Matthew Petersen | Daren Rindlisbacher | Tracey Thomas | David L Timmerman | | Your Occupation: Attorney, writer, photographer | | Spouse: Rama P. | Comments: An update for those I have not seen in many years: I graduated magna cum laude in physics with an emphasis in philosophy from B.Y.U. in 1995. I graduated from Harvard Law School in 1999. My wife and I met at Harvard, married in 1998, and we now live in California where we both work as attorneys, though I now spend most of my time on writing projects unrelated to legal work. My wife grew up in India, where her family still resides. Thus far, my wife and I have elected not to have children.
After returning from my mission, and after much thought and effort, I concluded that my earlier beliefs were not plausible. I have become convinced that the Church is not true, and, moreover, that the entire Abrahamic tradition--including Judaism, Christianity, and Islam--must be regarded as mythology only. I have considered myself an atheist for many years now--meaning simply that I am convinced that there is no such thing as a personal God. I maintain friendships with friends and family in the Church, including some that I baptized on my mission, but my feelings about the Church itself have become decidedly negative since I gave up my faith.
I reached these conclusions reluctantly, but felt, in the end, that the evidence left me no choice. Those of you who knew me in the field knew me as a hard worker, a thoughtful student of the scriptures, dedicated to spreading what I then thought was the truth; I hope that you will not now be offended merely because you may find my new beliefs less congenial than those I previously held.
The intent of this update is not to initiate debates with those who disagree: it is, instead, to let those who knew me in the field know where I stand now. I regard this as important, because I spent so much effort as a missionary proclaiming my previous beliefs. Since my beliefs have changed radically since then, I feel it appropriate to set the record straight.
Sincerely,
Joel M. Curzon. |
