Contigo Peru USA 29 Aug 2007

Peruvian Business 06 Dec 2006
I served my mission between 1998-2000 in PLE. Adam Anderson, Erick Rojas (both served in the PLE at the same time as me), and I have spent the last year doing extensive research into a business we are starting Lima. It is actually a multi-billion dollar venture and we are seeking investment capital. If anyone knows of someone who might be interested in investing in an offshore venture we would be more than willing to give stock in the company to those who can help us find sources of capital. To request a copy of our business plan please email me at mjwadman@yahoo.com.

Eagle Condor Humanitarian 25 Oct 2006
Well, my original message was not posted for some reason so let's try this again. There is a Peruvian Dinner on November 4th to help raise funds for Eagle Condor Humanitarians efforts in Peru. The dinner will be held in Salt Lake City and will include a authentic Peruvian meal, Peruvian Dancers, a silent auction and a photography exhibit from this year's expeditions to Peru. It will be a great night and all proceeds to go directly to Eagle Condor's Humanitarian efforts in Peru. If anybody has questions about the dinner and would like to attend or questions about Eagle Condor Humanitarian, feel free to contact me at adstew26@mac.com. You can also visit Eagle Condor's website at www.eagle-condor.org. I hope to hear from you.

life in Peru 31 Jul 2006
It's been a while since I served my mission but I take every chance I can to return with my frequent flier miles. You can see a lot of pictures on my website: www.spow.net.

I served from 1988-90. I don't have a whole lot to add to Bro Nielsons comments except that I usually paid people to wash my clothes. It used to be a dollar a load, might be 2 or 3 now.

Learn the language as fast as you can so you can communicate with the people. That is one of the greatest gifts I recieved. I keep in touch with several families even 15 years after my mission.

You will learn to keep toilet paper with you, once I forgot and had to use my dad's letter.

When I return, I only go to Lima but many grocery stores except dollars as well as Soles. The current conversion rate is 3.25 soles to one dollar. The ATM cards are a definite bonus these days and Bro Nielson was right to suggest you get a new card before leaving. The pouch that is sent from salt lake does not allow money or credit cards so your parents can't send you an ATM card. Sending money is also suspicious, I've heard ir you wrap it in carbon paper there is no way for the local mail people to detect the money and you will actually get the letter.

Regarding the money disparity with native companions, I always paid for my comp when we went out to nice restaurants i.e. pizza hut, kentucky fried, or steak on pday.

Food: They have all of the fruits and vegatables that we have. If you are ever in Lima, you can also get stuff like peanut butter at the major stores.

You are headed for a different world. In many ways better than ours. I love the Peruvians very much and you will too.

God Bless,

-john spowart, Texas

Random answers... from my point of view 29 Jul 2006
Well, while in the Peru MTC, you won't have to worry too much about any of the money situation. They do (or at least did when I was there) have a "Cultural Experience" for the North American boys in the MTC that included a trip to some of the nearby markets. You may be shocked at the lower end market- because of the chicken killing floor being right where you buy the dead bird- but trust me, you'll walk through worse. Once you leave, everything gets covered pretty well by what you get from the mission (as far as money goes). A dollar will (or would, when I was there) buy you about 3 sodas (Coke, and Inca Cola were my favorites), a snickers (if you're lucky enough to find a place that sells them- they do exist though) or about 3 small bags of doritos. There is some beautiful artisan work, mostly in mountain towns, which can be rather reasonably priced- just shop around before you buy. I did find that getting a little extra money every once in a while was really nice- when I had companions that didn't mind spending a little extra money (with some comps I had, I would have felt rather awkward spending an extra $20 every month). If you do want to get money out- there are ATM's in every city you'll serve- just make sure you don't mind paying the ATM fees from your bank for withdrawing from a non-american bank ATM (usually the fees are between 2 and 5 bucks- like a non-bank ATM here) I did that, and was very happy because I didn't ever have to worry about cash getting stolen from the mail. Just so you know, the ATM's are almost all Visa-based (not Master card or AMEX). You can withdraw in American money, and then change in into soles (for a small decrement in pricing) or withdraw directly in soles (for about the same decrement in pricing). Just make sure your card won't expire while you're gone- because calling a 1-800 number from Peru to activate it doesn't work too well- unless you go to an internet cafe, and call from the internet (on a slow connection) I know this from experience. You can get normal toiletries just fine. No worries there. But just know- there aren't toilet seats, flushing toilet paper, or sometimes even a toilet bowl (just footgrips next to a hole in the ground- but that's pretty rare). I don't know how things are there now, but we had a pensionista (mamita) who cooked every meal for us. The food was usually really good, and having someone else cook gave us more time to focus on the work. Sometimes the pensionista lived in the same house as us, and sometimes she didn't. Also, there's not heating (or carpet) there so if you're in a cold mountain town, you'll likely wake up pretty cold some mornings. Just get up and read your scriptures- it helps. Really though, as far as food and accommodations- the church has got your back, and things shouldn't be too bad. If they are too bad- talk to your leaders (district and zone) they'll likely let you (and maybe even help you) move. The monthly budget for rent and food (especially food) is very sufficient. One more thing, you'll be washing your clothes by hand (unless you're very lucky in where you live). In the MTC, they have normal washing machines etc, but once you leave, you leave behind a few conveniences- in exchange for a few that you gain. I wish you luck, Elder Jennings, and I wish I could go with you- because Peru is a wonderful place. You're truly blessed to be able to serve there.

Random questions 28 Jul 2006
I'm headed off to the MTC here in about a month and a half
So, from anyone who has recently returned from Peru:

What will a dollar buy you? Can you readily get things like shampoo, shaving cream, and other toiletries?

Did you find that your allocated money each month covered everything you needed it to or did you have to rely on your own personal account as well?

What are the housing conditions? I've heard that as of 20 years ago you stayed with a family that provided all your meals and your bed.

Any other useful or interesting information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
