Sorry we didn't make it to the reunion, but we have a good excuse, and I can't believe I forgot to mention it here. The night of the reunion we were busy making final preparations for cherrie to get her endowment the next day... so we could be sealed. We were sealed as a family on April 16, one month to the day before the arrival of our second child on may 16. As a matter of fact, we originally met for the first time in person on May 16... I guess 16 is just our lucky number.

Coy? 20 May 2005
Elder Coy? You're alive!!!!! I still vaguely remember our times in Aparri. J/k I remember Aparri very well. In fact, I ended living in Aparri for quite some time. In case you didn't know after the mission I went back to the Philippines and lived there for about 2 years until 2002. I taught combat martial arts and worked on writing some books about varied topics.

Yes, I still practice martial arts. Not breaking too many cinder blocks though...other things...just not blocks. And I spend a lot of that time teaching my sons. (4 and 2).

Mortgages, huh? Cool.

Give my regards to your family and I wish you good health and the best. Nice to hear from you.

Rick Bates

p.s. for the one who asked:
I speak 4 languages.
Spanish - my first language (I'm esl)
English
Ilocano
Tagalog.

I'm also conversant, though definitely not fluent, in American Sign Language (ASL).

Hey 20 May 2005
Hello, it's been a little while since I've sent a message. It's been great reading all of your messages and to hear how all of you have been. I'm jealous of the reunions and the missionary gatherings that I have missed living out here on the East Coast. This web site is the only way that I get to hear from each of you. Hiatt and Crabb, thanks for all the work you have done with all of the reunions. It's great to see the pictures that you have sent and the effort you have put forward in keeping us connected as the Ilagan Mission. Sounds like Bates can still speak many languages and probably punches cinder block walls, like he showed me in Aparri. Benge, thanks for the many laughs. You were a great missionary and congrats on your beautiful family. Devn Frandsen--congrats on your education. You've accomplished some big goals since your mission. Porter is married? Imagine, spending eternity with Porter. I spent 3 months in a place that felt like eternity (Naguilian) and never laughed so much in my life. Congrats on your marriage and keep us posted.
Haven't heard from Tanner lately. We had good times in the Air Con office. Let us know what is going on in your life. Where is Lars? Have you gotten hit by lightning lately? I got to see Elder Lund play some high level soccer after the mish, but haven't heard from him since. Where is Apostle and Wikstrom? Wik, you made a big difference in a lot of people's lives, including mine. Thanks for your example. I'd love to hear from Elder Elmer, whom I got to know in Bambang. Haven't heard from him since the mission. I could go on with the many missionaries that I got to serve with and call "Elder". Thanks for helping me make my mission a success.
As for me, things are going great. I have a beautiful wife and two very active boys. I still work in the mortgage business with Countrywide Home Loans. I have been running a lot and am planning on running a half-marathon next month. I am the executive secretary at church. I have forgotten most of my Tagalog, but I could never speak it very well in the first place. For those of you that look at this website, please take time to post a message. This is the only way I can keep in touch. I'd love to hear from you.

For the sake of something new. 19 May 2005
Well, I check the messages here every day and not much has been going on here. I thought I'd drop in and say hello to all the Ilaganites out there who still read this.
Monica and I are doing great. Working hard trying to sell our house. It's been a 5 year project and now when there is no work left to be done it is time to sell. We have outgrown it. It is only two bedrooms up with a Mother-in-Law apartment in the basement that we rent out. Anyway, we hope to be moving to the Layton/Kaysville area. Trying to get a little closer to work.
I thought I'd share an email I got yesterday. It is pretty good.

This is one of the best explanations of why God allows pain and

suffering that I have seen. It's an explanation other people will
understand.

A man went to a barbershop to have his hair cut and his beard

trimmed. As the barber began to work, they began to have a good

conversation. They talked about so many things and various subjects.

When they eventually touched on the subject of God, the barber said: "I
don't believe that God exists."

"Why do you say that?" asked the customer.

"Well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that God
doesn't exist. Tell me, if God exists, would there be so many sick
people? Would there be abandoned children? If God existed, there would
be neither suffering nor pain. I can't imagine a loving God who would
allow all of these things.?

The customer thought for a moment, but didn't respond because he didn't
want to start an argument. The barber finished his job and the customer
left the shop.

Just after he left the barbershop, he saw a man in the street with long
stringy, dirty hair and an untrimmed beard. He looked dirty and unkempt.
The customer turned back and entered the barber shop again and he said
to the barber:

"You know what? Barbers do not exist."

"How can you say that?" asked the surprised barber. "I am here,

And I am a barber. And I just worked on you!"

"No!" the customer exclaimed. "Barbers do not exist because if

They did there would not be people with long dirty hair and untrimmed
beards, like that man outside."

"Ah, but barbers do exist! What happens is that people do not come to
me."

"Exactly!" affirmed the customer. "That's the point! God too DOES
exist! What happens is that people don't come to HIM and do not look
for HIM.?

Good ol' days! 14 May 2005
The last few messages have stirred up memories, even though I didn't get any love from Stucki for being at the reunion. Let's get a PIM basketball tournament going sometime. We might get Callister to show up for that. Stucki may even fly in from DC for that! Tanner, he was at the reunion wasn't he? You are not the only old one Hiatt, just the oldest!! Much love to each and every one of you. Where are all the Filipino Elders at??

My kapatids 11 May 2005
Hernandez, I love you man. You cholo. Thanks Hiatt.

The weather here in AZ has been just been incredibly beautiful.

Hopefully, and this is a big hope, maybe this October I'll be able to go to Utah with my wife and kids to attend conference. Then, and maybe then, we'll be able to meet.

That, my maliliit na frens, would be awesome.

Kapayapaan sa labas.

Reunion 09 May 2005
I can't believe people like Frandsen and Litchfield showed up for the reunion! I wish I could have made it but living in D.C. makes it a bit more difficult. Has anyone seen or heard from one Jake Tanner?

By the way, Hiatt, you are old man. Nasty. Anyway, my wife is expecting at the end of July. This will be our first. Fun times, and sleepless nights are ahead. Pictures to follow.

Just some new stuff. 07 May 2005
Hey, just thought I'd finally get around to announcing our third baby. We're expecting a baby boy in July. It will be our third baby and our third boy. Ricky III is 4 now and Gabriel is 2.

Nu mabasa daytoy ni Sis. Gaviola...Sister mailiw met kami kaniyayu. Sayang nagbattit ti bisita yu ditoy, ania? Agkita tayu manen komantu. Kasta met ken ni Pres ken da Amistad. Nagragsak nga agkaduatayo. Ba'ag pay nga adda bassit nga filipino style a aggagayyem ditoy. Sige, Sister, sa susunod ulit.

For those who are interested we're still living in Arizona. I'm still in school. Life is still very very good.

For those who know me: I've now been put in charge of the spanish home teaching in the spanish group of the Alta Mesa Stake. In addition to making the spanish bulletin, I now have the awesome responsibility of teaching new and old members in the spanish group how to home teach. I've been removed from the english home teaching and will be put in the spanish. I'll be paired up with spanish members and we'll visit spanish families. This is all in preparation for the spanish group being instructed how to function as a unit to someday be made into a branch or a ward. Very exciting things to be involved in. Reminds me of the mission. Small, close membership, meeting in the relief society room. Attending convert baptisms of adults. It's all good stuff. Just thought I'd share that with those that care.
